We are seeking a motivated Staff Accountant to join our public accounting team and serve a diverse group of clients through our Paddock Lake, Kenosha, and Racine offices. This position is appropriate for an entry-level accountant or an accountant with up to approximately three years of experience who wants to develop broad experience in bookkeeping, tax, and assurance engagements. The Staff Accountant will work with senior accountants, managers, and partners. Responsibilities and independence will increase with demonstrated experience and technical ability. Entry-level staff receive close guidance, while staff with approximately two to three years of experience are expected to work more independently on routine bookkeeping and tax engagements, manage assigned deadlines, and recognize matters requiring review. Key Responsibilities
- Bookkeeping and Client Accounting
- Prepare and maintain bookkeeping records for multiple clients, including general ledger activity, bank and credit card reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, and adjusting journal entries.
- Tax Preparation
- Prepare individual, corporate, partnership, and other tax returns. Experienced staff are expected to complete routine returns with limited supervision and prepare accurate supporting workpapers.
- Tax Research and Notices
- Develop a working knowledge of federal and state tax law, perform basic tax research, and assist with routine taxing authority notices and client inquiries.
- Audit and Assurance Support
- Assist with audit fieldwork, testing, reviews, compilations, and other financial statement engagements. Prepare organized workpapers and follow the firm's engagement methodology and documentation standards.
- Industry Exposure
- Gain experience with governmental, nonprofit, employee benefit plan, for-profit, and other engagements based on client and firm needs.
- Financial Statements and Workpapers
- Prepare financial statements, trial balances, account analyses, reconciliations, supporting schedules, and related engagement documentation.
- Issue Identification
- Identify accounting and tax issues, perform appropriate initial research, and communicate matters requiring review to senior accountants, managers, or partners.
- Client Service
- Communicate professionally with clients to obtain information, resolve routine accounting and tax questions, and support timely completion of engagements.
- Technology
- Develop proficiency with QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, and the firm's accounting, tax, audit, workflow, and productivity software.
- Engagement Management
- Manage multiple assignments and deadlines, keep supervisor informed of progress, and take increasing responsibility for routine client engagements.
- Professional Standards and Development
- Follow firm policies and quality control standards, comply with applicable professional conduct requirements, participate in continuing education, and continue working toward CPA licensure. Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related business field.
- Zero to approximately three years of accounting or public accounting experience; internships and entry-level candidates are welcome.
- Interest in pursuing CPA licensure and continued professional development.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Commitment to accuracy, confidentiality, integrity, and high-quality client service.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel, QuickBooks, tax software, or other accounting applications is beneficial. Work Environment and Schedule
