This position will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, strengthening internal controls, managing budgeting and reporting, and providing strategic financial guidance to executive leadership. The ideal candidate has significant accounting leadership experience in cannabis or another highly regulated, inventory-intensive industry. Experience with cannabis regulation (including the preparation of annual financial reports) and taxation, including 280E, is strongly preferred. This is an in-person role in East Lansing, Michigan. Key Responsibilities Reporting directly to the CEO, and supervising a team, oversee the company's accounting and financial operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, and financial close. Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports. Develop, implement, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls. Lead the annual budgeting process and prepare financial forecasts, cash-flow projections, and variance analyses. Monitor cash flow, financial performance, working capital, and key performance indicators. Oversee inventory and cost accounting, including reconciliations between financial records, point-of-sale systems, and METRC data. Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local financial, tax, licensing, and regulatory requirements. Coordinate tax compliance and planning, including matters arising under Internal Revenue Code Section 280E. Provide strategic financial analysis and recommendations to the executive team. Prepare and present financial information to senior management and ownership. Coordinate with external accountants, tax professionals, auditors, financial institutions, and regulators. Lead, supervise, and mentor accounting and finance personnel. Support continuous improvement of financial systems, reporting processes, and operational controls. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field required. CPA or MBA preferred. Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leader. Experience in the cannabis industry strongly preferred. Experience in a highly regulated, multi-location, retail, manufacturing, or inventory-intensive business required. Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis. Familiarity with cannabis accounting, METRC, inventory costing, and Section 280E preferred. Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex financial and operational data. Proficiency with accounting software, Microsoft Excel, and financial-reporting tools. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated leadership ability, sound judgment, integrity, and attention to detail. Ability to handle confidential information appropriately and operate effectively in a rapidly changing environment.
