Job Description

We are looking for an Unclaimed Property Specialist to support a healthcare organization in California on a Long-term Contract basis. This position focuses on managing unclaimed property compliance across multiple entities and jurisdictions, helping the organization meet reporting obligations while reducing financial and regulatory exposure. The role works closely with finance, revenue cycle, payroll, accounts payable, legal, and compliance partners to research outstanding items, maintain accurate records, and strengthen operational controls.
Responsibilities:
Review outstanding financial items such as patient-related credits, vendor payments, payroll checks, refunds, and overpayments to determine potential unclaimed property exposure. Research aged balances, stale-dated payments, unapplied amounts, and account variances to support proper resolution and state compliance. Prepare required filings and coordinate remittances to state agencies in line with applicable deadlines and jurisdictional rules. Maintain organized supporting documentation and audit-ready records that align with internal retention standards and regulatory expectations. Partner with accounting, patient financial services, payroll, accounts payable, treasury, legal, compliance, and IT teams to validate data and resolve ownership questions. Establish and refine procedures, controls, and workflow standards that improve the consistency and accuracy of unclaimed property administration. Analyze trends and root causes behind refund activity, overdue payments, and credit balances to help reduce future escheatment volume. Respond to internal and external audit requests by compiling schedules, records, reconciliations, and clear explanations of account activity. Serve as a resource for internal teams by clarifying unclaimed property requirements and promoting compliant handling of related transactions. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience. At least 3 years of experience in unclaimed property, accounting, compliance, or a comparable finance-focused role. Knowledge of multi-state unclaimed property regulations, dormancy periods, and reporting requirements. Strong analytical, reconciliation, and research skills, with the ability to investigate discrepancies and interpret financial data. High level of accuracy and organization, with the ability to manage deadlines in a regulated environment. Proficiency with Excel and financial systems, including general ledger, patient accounting, or related platforms. Experience supporting due diligence activities, regulatory research, financial reporting, and process improvement initiatives. Healthcare, hospital, or multi-entity organizational experience is preferred, especially where patient refunds or revenue cycle operations are involved.
