Job Description
About The Company The Company, Inc. is a publicly traded healthcare company with an active SEC reporting history and a growing investor base. We are in a dynamic phase of our development, with capital formation activity, investment banking relationships, and potential IPO-related milestones on the horizon. This is an opportunity to join a company at an inflection point where your contributions will have a direct, visible impact on the organization's financial trajectory. The Opportunity We are hiring a Director of Accounting to lead our accounting and finance team, reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer. This is a hands-on leadership role: you will own the monthly close, manage a small team of two, prepare and review SEC filings, serve as the primary liaison with external auditors, and ensure the company's financial reporting is accurate, timely, and fully compliant. Our CFO has over a decade of tenure with the company and deep relationships with investors, board members, auditors, and legal counsel. She is focused on high-value strategic activities including capital raises, investment banking, and investor relations. Your job is to make that possible by running the day-to-day accounting function with minimal oversight — delivering clean, reviewed financial packages that are ready for CFO-level review, not raw work-in-progress. We are also committed to integrating AI tools into our accounting workflows. This is not aspirational — it is an active initiative with executive sponsorship and dedicated AI subject matter experts supporting the team. We expect our Director of Accounting to embrace AI as a force multiplier, lead its adoption within the department, and ensure that AI-assisted outputs meet professional standards. What You'll Do Own and manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process from start to finish Manage, develop, and hold accountable a team of two accounting professionals, including conducting regular one-on-ones, assigning work, reviewing output, and addressing performance Prepare and/or review financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow) to SEC reporting standards Prepare first drafts of SEC filings including 10-Q, 10-K, and 8-K reports with footnotes and MD&A disclosures Serve as the primary day-to-day liaison with external auditors: manage PBC lists, respond to audit inquiries, and coordinate fieldwork Manage the compliance calendar: track all SEC filing deadlines, tax due dates, audit milestones, and regulatory requirements Review all journal entries, reconciliations, and work papers prepared by your team before posting or finalization Perform technical accounting research on complex transactions (lease accounting, revenue recognition, equity transactions) and prepare accounting memos Establish, maintain, and improve internal controls and accounting policy documentation Lead AI tool adoption within the accounting team: work with company AI specialists to implement automated workflows, validate AI-generated outputs, and ensure the team uses technology effectively Provide the CFO with clean, reviewed financial packages and proactive communication on compliance items, team performance, and operational issues
