[Accounting Staff / Accounts Payable / Accounts Receivable Staff, as applicable] Full time Job Summary The Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations of the organization and ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting. This position provides leadership and oversight of accounting functions, including general ledger management, accounts payable and receivable, reconciliations, payroll support, budgeting, financial reporting, and internal controls. As a ministry-focused nonprofit, the Accounting Manager is expected to approach financial responsibilities with integrity, excellence, confidentiality, and a strong commitment to faithful stewardship of the resources entrusted to the organization. This position works closely with leadership, department managers, and external partners to support sound financial decision-making and the organization's mission. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Accounting & Financial Operations Oversee the daily accounting activities of the organization. Maintain accurate and complete financial records in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and applicable nonprofit accounting standards. Manage the general ledger and ensure transactions are properly recorded and classified. Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and other accounting transactions. Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, and cash disbursements. Reconcile bank, credit card, investment, and other financial accounts on a timely basis. Monitor cash flow and communicate significant financial matters to leadership. Maintain organized and confidential financial documentation. Financial Reporting Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for leadership and the Board of Directors. Provide financial analysis and explanations of budget-to-actual variances. Assist leadership with financial planning and decision-making. Prepare financial information and schedules required for annual audits or financial reviews. Ensure financial reports are accurate, timely, and presented in a manner that is understandable to non-financial leaders. Budgeting & Planning Assist with the preparation and administration of the annual organizational budget. Work with department leaders to develop and monitor departmental budgets. Track budget performance and identify significant variances. Provide guidance to managers regarding appropriate use and stewardship of organizational funds. Assist with financial forecasting and long-term financial planning. Nonprofit & Compliance Maintain accounting practices and financial records in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local requirements. Assist with nonprofit financial reporting and compliance requirements. Maintain appropriate documentation for restricted and unrestricted funds. Monitor and properly account for donor-restricted contributions and designated funds. Assist with grant accounting and financial reporting, as applicable. Support the organization's annual audit, review, tax filings, and other external financial requirements. Maintain appropriate internal controls to safeguard organizational assets. Internal Controls & Stewardship Develop, maintain, and improve accounting procedures and internal controls. Identify opportunities to strengthen financial processes and reduce risk. Ensure appropriate authorization and documentation of financial transactions. Safeguard organizational assets and confidential financial information. Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and responsible stewardship. Ensure financial practices reflect the organization's values and commitment to integrity. Leadership & Collaboration Provide leadership, direction, and support to accounting staff and other employees involved in financial processes. Partner with Human Resources and leadership regarding payroll, benefits, and other employee-related financial matters. Collaborate with department leaders to address financial questions and provide support. Communicate financial information clearly and professionally to individuals with varying levels of financial expertise. Maintain positive working relationships with staff, vendors, auditors, financial institutions, donors, and other stakeholders. Additional Duty COE Activity 10% of work week
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. 5+ years of progressive accounting experience. Experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, financial reporting, and budgeting. Strong understanding of accounting principles and internal controls. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information. Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills. Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel. Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with leadership and staff.
Preferred:
CPA or other relevant professional certification. Nonprofit accounting experience. Experience with fund accounting and restricted contributions. Experience with grants and grant reporting. Experience supervising or managing accounting staff. Familiarity with nonprofit audits and Form 990 preparation.
