Job Description

The Home Equity Manager is responsible for overseeing the credit union's home equity loan portfolio, ensuring that all operations run efficiently and comply with industry regulations. This role involves managing the entire lifecycle of home equity products, from origination through servicing, while driving the growth of the portfolio. The Home Equity Manager will work closely with underwriting, sales, and operations teams to deliver exceptional service and maintain high standards of compliance, risk management, and customer satisfaction. This individual will be a key leader, fostering a collaborative team environment while ensuring optimal performance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Home Equity portfolio, including origination, underwriting, servicing, and collections to ensure compliance with credit union policies, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices. Lead and develop a team of Home Equity professionals, including training, mentoring, and motivating staff to meet performance goals and deliver excellent member service. Build and maintain strong relationships with members, ensuring their needs are met, providing guidance on Home Equity products, and resolving issues promptly. Ensure that Home Equity products are compliant with federal and state regulations, internal policies, and investor guidelines. Monitor the portfolio for any risk-related issues and implement appropriate actions to mitigate risks. Continuously evaluate operational workflows, identify and implement improvements to streamline processes, reduce errors, and increase efficiency while maintaining high service standards. Regularly analyze portfolio performance and produce reports for senior management, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities for growth. Monitor credit quality and ensure adherence to credit standards. Work closely with other departments such as underwriting, lending, sales, and collections to ensure alignment on goals, strategies, and processes. Ensure high levels of member satisfaction by addressing concerns, resolving issues, and delivering efficient, friendly service. Assist in developing new Home Equity products and services to meet market demands and the evolving needs of members. Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION
High school diploma or equivalent Bachelor's degree in business, Finance, or a related field preferred Relevant industry certifications (e.g., Certified Mortgage Banker (CMB), Home Equity Specialist) are preferred NLMS licensing required
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
In-depth knowledge of Home Equity industry regulations, including state and federal guidelines, compliance, and risk management practices. Strong understanding of mortgage and consumer lending processes, credit union operations, and industry best practices. Familiarity with underwriting standards for home equity products, including credit risk assessment, property appraisals, and income verification. Understanding of risk management principles, particularly in relation to loan defaults, delinquencies, and portfolio health. Knowledge of best practices in customer service, with a focus on conflict resolution, member engagement, and satisfaction.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Minimum of 5 years of experience in mortgage or consumer lending, with at least 2-3 years in a leadership or managerial role overseeing Home Equity products. Proven experience in managing Home Equity portfolios, including the origination, underwriting, and servicing of home equity loans. Experience in working with regulatory agencies, internal audits, and compliance functions to ensure adherence to all applicable rules and regulations. Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team, drive performance, and ensure operational efficiency.
HARD/TECHNICAL SKILLS/ABILITIES
Proficiency in mortgage lending and loan origination systems (e.g., Ellie Mae Encompass, Calyx Point, etc.). Strong ability to analyze financial data, generate reports, and make data-driven decisions. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other office software. Experience with credit scoring models, risk mitigation strategies, and portfolio management tools. In-depth knowledge of the Home Equity Loan and Line of Credit (HELOC) regulations, including Truth in Lending (TILA), Home Ownership and Equity Protection Act (HOEPA), and applicable state laws. Strong project management skills to oversee initiatives related to process improvement, product development, and departmental goals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with staff, management, and external stakeholders, such as vendors and regulators.
