Full Job Description Job Summary:
We are seeking a strong Accounting Manager who combines solid technical accounting skills with proven leadership ability. This person will lead the Accounting department of our growing insurance agency, directly supervising the Insurance Accounting and General Ledger teams, as well as managing the month-end close and financial reporting processes. Success in this role requires more than technical competence — it requires the ability to lead, coach, and develop a team, set clear expectations, hold people accountable, and create a culture of accuracy, ownership, and continuous improvement. Responsibilities Leadership & People Management Lead, coach, and develop the Insurance Accounting team and Accounts Payable Specialist. Set clear performance expectations, provide regular feedback, and conduct formal performance reviews. Identify skill gaps, create development plans, and actively coach team members to improve accuracy, efficiency, and ownership. Foster a positive, accountable team culture focused on quality, deadlines, and continuous improvement. Insurance Accounting Oversee all Accounts Payable processes for agency-billed policies, carrier remittances, and policy financing payables/receivables. Oversee high-volume Accounts Receivable data entry, carrier commission reconciliations, and direct bill receivables. Ensure proper handling of premium trust accounts and segregation of fiduciary funds. Manage and optimize the insurance accounting platform to ensure accurate data flow, efficient processes, and reliable financial reporting. Partner with cross functional teams to resolve accounting and process issues and support business initiatives. General Ledger and Financial Reporting & Analysis Responsible for reviewing and posting transactions to the general ledger. Own the month-end close process, including journal entries, accruals, and balance sheet reconciliations. Maintain and strengthen, when needed, internal controls. Support banking activities across the organization. Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Support budgeting, forecasting, and special analysis requests from leadership.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2-3 years in a supervisory or management role with direct people leadership. Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop accounting staff. Experience building or improving accounting processes and controls. Strong preference for insurance agency experience (agency bill / direct bill accounting). Proficiency in agency management systems (e.g., AMS360, Applied Epic, or similar) and accounting software. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills for reconciliations, reporting, and data analysis High attention to detail and excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills. Proven track record of holding people accountable while building a positive team environment.
