An Insurance Underwriter evaluates and measures risk and advises businesses in insurance, banking and securities. Recommends customers to be approved for insurance coverage, and develops policies and premium levels. Reviews loan applications, evaluates credit-worthiness of loan applicants and analyzes the investment risk of a loan for the bank. Evaluates risk in different types of securities and advises clients on investments that will yield highest profits.

Job Description
- Review and underwrite VA mortgage loan files to ensure compliance with VA, investor, and company guidelines
- Analyze borrower credit, income, assets, and collateral to determine loan eligibility
- Calculate and validate income for self-employed and wage-earner borrowers
- Evaluate appraisals and collateral documentation for accuracy and completeness
- Issue clear and concise underwriting decisions, including conditions and loan stipulations
- Communicate effectively with loan officers, processors, and internal partners to resolve file conditions
- Ensure all loans meet compliance, quality control, and regulatory requirements prior to approval
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date underwriting documentation within the LOS
- Meet established productivity, quality, and turnaround time standards
- Stay current on VA guideline updates and industry changes Location and Schedule This is a full-time remote opportunity for candidates located outside of the Troy, MI and Ft. Lauderdale, FL areas. Candidates within a 50-mile radius of either office will be expected to work onsite. Our standard working hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Skills & Qualifications
- 3+ years of mortgage underwriting experience with a strong focus on VA loans
- Must hold SAR certification, DE certification is a plus
- In-depth knowledge of VA underwriting guidelines and agency requirements
- Experience reviewing complex income scenarios including self-employed borrowers
- Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to manage a high volume pipeline in a deadline-driven environment
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Proficiency with Encompass or similar loan origination systems Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with FHA, Conventional, and USDA underwriting
- Prior experience in a fast-paced retail or correspondent lending environment What We Offer |
