At Rural Mutual Insurance, we're seeking a detail-oriented and relationship-driven Territory Insurance Underwriter to support our agents and business policyholders. In this role, you'll balance time between fieldwork and the home office, evaluating risk and making sound underwriting decisions while partnering closely with agents. Compensation:
$65,000
  • $85,000 yearly
Responsibilities:
Evaluate farm and commercial risks for acceptance, modification, or declination in alignment with company underwriting guidelines and assigned authority . Conduct onsite inspections of prospects and insureds, assessing operations, exposures, and risk controls ; provide clear, actionable risk‑management guidance to agents and policyholders. Prepare complete underwriting instructions to support accurate rating, pricing, and issuance of new policies. Apply and justify Individual Rate Modifications (IRM) for farm and commercial policies (excluding Workers' Compensation). Build strong agent partnerships by offering guidance on eligibility , coverage options , risk improvement , and underwriting expectations . Participate in agent training sessions to support product knowledge , risk evaluation skills , and documentation standards . Manage a structured weekly schedule of field visits, balancing travel with in-office time for reporting, underwriting analysis, and communication with agents and home office teams. Maintain accurate, timely documentation of underwriting decisions, inspection findings, and communications. Ensure compliance with company policies, departmental procedures, and all applicable regulatory requirements . Perform related duties as needed to support overall departmental goals.
Qualifications:
Minimum of three (3) years of property and casualty underwriting experience. Agriculture or agribusiness knowledge strongly preferred. Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Risk Management & Insurance, Agribusiness, or equivalent educational and/or work experience preferred. Progress toward professional insurance designations such as
CPCU, AFIS, AU
, or similar is beneficial. Demonstrates strong analytical and decision‑making skills, especially when evaluating diverse commercial and agricultural operations. Builds trust through honesty, professionalism, and integrity . Thrives when working independently in a field‑based environment while collaborating effectively with internal teams and agents. Approaches challenges with initiative, urgency, and high energy . Possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly. Maintains a customer‑focused mindset , delivering positive experiences to agents and policyholders. Shows strong organizational and time‑management abilities, including managing travel, documentation, and competing priorities. Is proficient with Microsoft 365 , underwriting platforms, and digital reporting tools. Bilingual abilities (e.g., Spanish, Hmong ) are a plus. Ability to travel within assigned territory; valid driver's license required . Must be able to walk on farms, commercial properties, and uneven terrain during onsite inspections. Must be able to communicate clearly in person, by phone, and in writing.
