Job Description
Residential Mortgage Loan Quality Control Underwriter - Hybrid Amherst, NY Are you an experienced mortgage underwriter who enjoys digging into the details and ensuring loan quality? We're seeking a Residential Mortgage Loan Quality Control Underwriter to join a collaborative team responsible for conducting comprehensive reviews of previously closed residential mortgage loans. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys analytical work, regulatory compliance, and identifying opportunities to mitigate lending risk. You'll play a key role in reviewing residential mortgage files for adherence to investor guidelines, regulatory requirements, and underwriting standards while working alongside experienced professionals in a quality-focused environment. What You'll Do As a Quality Control Underwriter, you will: Perform comprehensive post-closing quality control and representation & warranty reviews of residential mortgage loans.
Re-underwrite mortgage files to evaluate compliance with underwriting, investor, and agency guidelines.
Analyze borrower credit, income, assets, liabilities, collateral, and supporting documentation.
Recalculate debt-to-income ratios, income, and asset calculations when necessary.
Review complex self-employed borrower tax returns and financial statements.
Evaluate appraisals, title work, and collateral documentation for completeness and marketability.
Identify fraud indicators and assess overall loan risk.
Document findings clearly and provide recommendations for corrective action when appropriate.
Stay current on mortgage regulations, investor requirements, and underwriting guideline changes.
Support quality assurance initiatives and assist with internal system testing and process improvements.
What We're Looking For
Experience
5-7 years of experience within the residential mortgage industry.
At least 3-5 years of recent residential mortgage underwriting experience.
Experience underwriting Conventional, Jumbo, Non-QM, Business Purpose, and other non-conventional loan products.
Previous Quality Control (QC), post-closing audit, or forensic loan review experience is strongly preferred.
Experience working with multiple lender and investor guidelines.
Condominium and cooperative review experience is a plus.
Loan closing experience is beneficial.
Technical Knowledge Strong understanding of: Residential mortgage underwriting
Secondary market and investor guidelines
Mortgage documentation and title review
Federal mortgage regulations, including:
TRID
TILA
RESPA
QM/ATR
Regulation Z
Fair Lending requirements Experience with industry tools such as CoreLogic, LexisNexis, ComplianceEase/Compliance Analyzer, National Appraisal Registry, PACER, AM Best, and Automated Underwriting Systems (DU/LPA) is preferred.
