POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for ensuring reimbursement from patients or other responsible parties while assisting patients in understanding their healthcare insurance coverage by determining eligibility, benefits, and utilization requirements. Responsible for up-front point-of-service collections and financially securing patient accounts by setting up appropriate financial arrangements with patients to avoid bad debt. Assists patients, when appropriate, in accessing programs such as Medi-Cal, Uncompensated Care, and Hospital Presumptive Eligibility. Focuses on individual performance in registration and financial counseling, Key Performance Indicators, and expediting approvals by gathering and completing forms before the patient is discharged from the Emergency Department. Continues to enhance registration and fundamental financial knowledge and skill sets required and expected of the role, including knowledge of diverse financial programs. Interacts with patients only after a medical screening exam has been performed. Completes comprehensive training programs and certification as required to facilitate eligibility for Hospital Presumptive Eligibility qualifications when necessary. Maintains graceful, empathetic, and respectful customer service at all times. Ensures all patients are seen regardless of insurance coverage or ability to pay.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & TRAINING

Minimum of two years of experience in front office/medical billing and/or current hospital registration/admitting. Minimum of two years of experience in insurance verification and/or medical/hospital billing. High school graduate required or equivalent; continuing education in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration preferred. Knowledge of eligibility requirements for Medi-Cal, Hospital Presumptive Eligibility Program, Medicare, Covered California, COBRA, limited benefit plans, VVC, and Uncompensated Care Programs. IPA knowledge. Medical terminology required. Excellent communication skills. Demonstrates flexibility in adapting to change. Strong analytical skills and problem-solving abilities with the ability to act and decide accordingly.
