Patient Financial Counselor

Job Description

Description We are looking for a Patient Financial Counselor to support individuals and families as they navigate the financial aspects of behavioral health services. This is a Contract position for a detail-oriented individual who can explain coverage, costs, and payment options with empathy and clarity. The role works closely with patients, care teams, and payers to reduce confusion around treatment expenses and help secure appropriate financial support.
Responsibilities:
  • Review insurance details to confirm eligibility, benefit levels, copayment amounts, deductibles, and expected patient responsibility before or during treatment.
  • Guide patients and family members through the financial side of care by explaining charges, coverage limits, and payment expectations in a clear and supportive manner.
  • Help individuals complete assistance paperwork and connect them with available funding sources or other programs that may ease the cost of care.
  • Communicate with insurance providers to address authorization needs, clarify benefits, and resolve questions related to claims or billing concerns.
  • Keep financial records current and complete while following organizational standards and applicable compliance requirements.
  • Deliver attentive service during sensitive conversations, using compassion and care when assisting patients facing difficult circumstances.
  • Support front-end patient financial processes related to intake and online financial counseling activities as needed. Requirements
  • High school diploma required; an associate or bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • At least 2 years of experience in healthcare financial counseling, patient access, medical billing, or a closely related function.
  • Working knowledge of insurance verification, benefit interpretation, and patient financial assistance resources.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain complex financial information to patients and families.
  • Proven customer service and problem-solving abilities in a healthcare or patient-facing environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to manage detailed documentation accurately while handling multiple priorities.
