Job Description
Senior System Safety Engineer Oil and Gas pipeline company hiring for a Senior System Safety Engineer to lead product‑level safety for our in‑line tools and related equipment. This is a hands‑on engineering role , not an EHS or workplace‑safety position. You'll evaluate electrical, mechanical, and environmental risks, drive structured hazard analyses, and provide independent, defensible recommendations that shape how our tools are designed, verified, and deployed. In this role, you'll operate as a cross‑disciplinary safety authority —reviewing designs, identifying credible threats, defining safety requirements, and communicating system risk, assumptions, and residual risk to engineering and executive leadership. What You'll Do Establish and maintain a formal safety evaluation process Develop documented safety rationales and safety cases for pipeline inspection tools Lead hazard analyses (FMEA, fault‑tree analysis, system safety activities) Define credible threats and justify exclusions of severe consequences Identify applicable safety standards and accepted engineering practices Review electrical, mechanical, and control‑system designs and recommend improvements Support test planning, review verification evidence, and close safety‑critical gaps Manage and review safety‑related supplier and contractor work Communicate safety‑case status, assumptions, mitigation options, and residual risk Senior‑Level Expectations Make clear, defensible recommendations even with incomplete data Identify missing information and close gaps through analysis, test, or expert input Prevent unsupported assumptions, excessive debate, and ineffective controls Apply mechanism‑based, system‑level safety thinking across electrical, mechanical, and environmental domains Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related field 8+ years in electrical engineering, product safety, functional safety, compliance, or safety‑critical product development Experience applying structured safety methods to complex engineered systems Working knowledge of hazard analysis, risk reduction, verification/validation, and residual‑risk communication Familiarity with functional‑safety frameworks (ISO 13849, IEC 61508, IEC 62061, etc.) Understanding of hazardous‑location / explosive‑atmosphere concepts Strong knowledge of DC power distribution, batteries, protection circuits, stored energy, and fault behavior Ability to review schematics, PCB layouts, connectors, enclosures, BOMs, and test data Clear communication with both technical and management audiences Preferred Qualifications Experience designing electrical/electronic equipment for hazardous locations Experience with lithium battery packs and BMS/protection circuits Knowledge of hazardous‑location evaluation methods for flammable/explosive atmospheres Experience preparing or reviewing safety documentation and residual‑risk summaries
