(EJ32), VA Job Type FT Salary W BN Job Number 26-01340 Department Tax Administration Opening Date 09/12/2026 Closing Date 9/25/2026 11:59 PM Eastern Pay Grade S24 Posting Type Promotional Job Announcement This position assists in the management of the county's tax relief and deferral programs for seniors and people with disabilities, and the tax exemption programs for disabled veterans and surviving spouses. Supervises staff who administer the intake, review, audit, and deferral of applications. Performs the more complex financial and investigative audits of tax relief applications and supporting documentation Maintains referral program partnership between the tax relief section and other county agencies. Interprets and explains state and local tax laws, policies, and regulations regarding personal property, rental grant, and real estate tax relief cases to other professionals, and the general public. Ensures changes in state legislation are actively incorporated into Fairfax County exemption programs. Individual serves as one of the liaisons for the Department of Tax Administration with the Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Veterans Affairs, regarding application appeals, audits, and compliance matters. Resolves conflicts and explain determinations to taxpayers and/or legal representatives verbally or through written communication. This position works under general supervision of the tax relief section manager.

The assigned functional areas of this position include audit, program management, financial investigation, and/or customer service. Knowledge of the mission, goals and objectives of the organizational unit, program or activities to which incumbent is assigned; Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques relating to various functional areas of business operation (e.g., personnel, budgeting and financial management, contract administration and management); Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques governing management, organization, operations and programmatic services; Ability to identify and describe a range of possible solutions for solving business problems; Ability to apply research methods to design studies and assessments, and statistical analysis techniques to identify patterns and trends in data; Ability to use word processing and presentation software to prepare documents, and to use spreadsheet and statistical analysis software packages to store, manipulate, analyze and present data; Ability to train, lead, and/or supervise paraprofessional staff. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to") Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in the field related to the assigned functional area; plus two years of professional work experience within the functional area.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED
Valid driver's license.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a credit check, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
3 or more years of experience within the assigned functional areas. 3 or more years of experience supervising and training staff. Extensive knowledge of the tax relief system and state and local statutes governing tax relief, deferrals, and exemptions. 3 or more years of experience auditing real estate, personal property and tax relief for renter's applications including the review of financial and legal documentation. 3 years of experience working with vulnerable population. 3 years of experience reviewing individual and business income tax returns and applying tax laws and regulations. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with both internal and external contacts. Ability to identify trends and project challenges. Detail oriented, able to multitask and prioritize. Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Job is generally sedentary in nature; however, visual acuity is required to read date on computer monitor, incumbent must be able to operate keyboard drive equipment. Must communicate with others. Employee may be required to do some walking, standing, and bending. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
