Job Description
Sales & Use Tax Manager Position Summary We are seeking an experienced Sales & Use Tax Manager to lead all aspects of indirect tax compliance, planning, and audit management. This role will be responsible for ensuring compliance with multi-state sales and use tax regulations, identifying tax-saving opportunities, supporting business operations, and partnering with internal stakeholders to minimize tax risk. The ideal candidate will have strong technical sales and use tax expertise, exceptional analytical skills, and the ability to navigate complex tax issues in a fast-paced environment. Key Responsibilities Manage the preparation, review, and filing of sales and use tax returns across multiple jurisdictions Ensure compliance with state and local indirect tax regulations, including nexus and registration requirements Lead sales and use tax audits, inquiries, and voluntary disclosure agreements Research and interpret tax laws, regulations, and legislative changes that may impact the organization Review business transactions and contracts to determine appropriate tax treatment Partner with Finance, Accounting, Operations, Procurement, and Sales teams to address indirect tax matters Identify and implement process improvements to enhance compliance and efficiency Oversee tax exemption certificate management and validation processes Monitor and maintain tax determination systems and automation tools Analyze tax data and perform reconciliations to ensure accuracy of tax reporting Assist with tax provision and financial reporting support related to indirect taxes Develop and maintain internal controls, policies, and procedures related to sales and use tax compliance Provide guidance and training to internal teams on indirect tax matters Support special projects, mergers and acquisitions, and business initiatives from a tax perspective Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related field CPA, MST, or CMI certification preferred 5+ years of sales and use tax experience, preferably in a corporate tax department, public accounting, or consulting environment Strong knowledge of multi-state sales and use tax regulations Experience managing state tax audits and regulatory inquiries Proficiency with tax research tools and indirect tax software (Vertex, Avalara, OneSource, or similar) Advanced Excel skills and experience working with large data sets Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex tax concepts to non-tax stakeholders Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment Preferred Experience Experience with manufacturing, distribution, retail, e-commerce, or multi-state operations Knowledge of tax automation and ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, or Microsoft Dynamics Experience leading indirect tax process improvement initiatives Supervisory or people management experience Compensation & Benefits Competitive base salary and performance incentives Comprehensive health, dental, and vision benefits 401(k) with company match Paid time off and company holidays Professional development and certification support Career advancement opportunities within a growing organization Determining compensation for this role (and others) at Vaco/Highspring depends upon a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual's skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, office location and other geographic considerations, as well as other business and organizational needs.
