Job Description

Tax Manager Bel Air, MD $110,000 - $140,000 Some firms grow by burning people out. This one grew by making people stay. That's a very different thing. You can usually tell a lot about a CPA firm by how long people remain there once they join. Here, some of the current Partners started as interns over twenty years ago. Not because they got stuck. Because they genuinely built careers there. And honestly, that says more than any "best place to work" badge ever could. Why this role exists The firm continues to grow steadily across Maryland and they're looking to strengthen the tax team with experienced Supervisors and Managers who want more than just another busy season cycle. This isn't a replacement hire. It's growth. The client base is expanding, relationships are deepening, and they want strong people in place before workloads become overwhelming. That approach alone tells you a lot about how the leadership team thinks. What makes this firm different There's a very deliberate balance here between professional standards and actual quality of life. Yes, expectations are high. But there's also a recognition that people perform better when they aren't permanently exhausted. Even during busy season, the firm caps hours around 55 per week. Not "55 but secretly 70". Actually 55. Which means people can still function like normal human beings outside work during the busiest part of the year. That tends to create happier teams, stronger client service, and far less turnover. Funny how often firms ignore that formula. The role itself This is a broad, generalist tax role with strong exposure across different industries and client types. Perfect for someone who enjoys variety rather than becoming hyper niche too early. You'll be involved in: Reviewing and managing tax engagements Building client relationships Supporting and mentoring staff Advising clients across a wide range of tax matters Helping manage workflow and engagement delivery And because the firm has multiple offices and a collaborative structure, there's strong visibility internally as well. You're not just another name buried inside a giant department. The environment This is one of those firms where culture feels natural rather than manufactured. People genuinely know each other. And outside busy season, the team actually spends time together because they want to. Winery visits Crab feasts Game days Team picnics Office events that people genuinely enjoy attending It sounds simple, but it creates something a lot of firms struggle to build: A workplace people feel connected to. The part people quietly care about most The benefits are genuinely strong. 100% employee healthcare coverage Dental and vision Short and long term disability 401(k) CPA support including reimbursement and study time But honestly, the bigger benefit is probably the sustainability of the environment itself. This feels like a place where you could build a ten year career without sacrificing your personal life in the process. Who this suits You'll likely enjoy this if: You come from a generalist tax background and enjoy variety You want progression without burnout culture You like mentoring and supporting junior staff You value stability and long term career growth You want to be part of a collaborative team rather than a highly political environment This role suits people who want to build something long term rather than simply jumping firms every two years to survive. What they're looking for CPA preferred, or someone progressing toward it Public accounting tax experience Strong technical and review skills Someone collaborative, reliable, and growth minded Tax Supervisors stepping toward Manager level are also encouraged to apply The mindset matters just as much as the technical ability here. They want people who genuinely care about the team around them and the clients they support. Not ready with a resume? Or want a bit more information before applying? That's fine. Apply the old-fashioned way, or simply reach out to me on LinkedIn or through the Distinct Recruitment website. I'll happily talk you through the role, the firm, and where it could take you before you make any commitments. I'm Abigail Stephen, Recruiter at Distinct. I don't just look at job specs; I look at people, and where they'll thrive. It's not about filling gaps. It's about finding a fit that lasts. Outside of work, balance for me is Pilates to reset, travel to explore, and skiing to recharge. Because the truth is, you don't slog through hours for the love of a spreadsheet. You do it for the freedom it buys you. Same principle here.
