Position Summary HEDCO is seeking an experienced and hands-on Controller to lead the organization's accounting, financial reporting, internal controls, compliance, and day-to-day finance operations. Reporting to the CEO, the Controller is responsible for the integrity, accuracy, timeliness, and compliance of HEDCO's accounting and financial operations. The successful candidate will bring strong technical accounting expertise, sound judgment, and the ability to translate financial information into meaningful insights for organizational leadership. This position will oversee core accounting functions, grants and contracts, audits, financial reporting, budgeting support, internal controls, and finance staff while continuously strengthening HEDCO's financial systems and processes. Key Responsibilities Lead day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, reconciliations, fixed assets, payroll-related accounting, journal entries, accruals, and month-end and year-end close. Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and supporting schedules in accordance with GAAP and applicable nonprofit accounting requirements. Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure transactions, journal entries, accruals, allocations, and reconciliations are accurate and properly documented. Manage grant and contract accounting, including restricted funding, cost allocation, allowable costs, indirect costs, reimbursement support, invoicing, reporting, and compliance with funding requirements. Monitor organizational and program budgets against actual results and prepare variance analyses. Work with program and organizational leaders to understand and address significant financial variances. Support annual budget development, cash-flow forecasting, financial projections, and scenario analysis. Maintain and continuously improve internal controls, segregation of duties, financial procedures, documentation standards, payment controls, and fraud-prevention practices. Coordinate annual financial statement audits, Single Audits, and other applicable state and federal audit activities. Prepare schedules and supporting documentation and serve as a primary day-to-day contact for auditors. Ensure timely completion of required financial and statutory reporting. Support compliance with applicable grant, contract, tax, retirement-plan, and regulatory requirements. Supervise, coach, and develop finance staff responsible for bookkeeping, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and related accounting functions. Improve accounting workflows through appropriate use of financial systems, digital tools, dashboards, automation, and responsible AI-enabled processes while maintaining appropriate controls. Maintain high-quality financial data and support management dashboards, program-level reporting, cost analysis, and other decision-support needs. Partner with banks, auditors, vendors, funders, program leaders, lending staff, and other stakeholders on financial and accounting matters. Escalate material financial, compliance, control, cash-flow, or audit issues promptly to executive leadership. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required. Seven or more years of progressively responsible accounting and financial-management experience. Experience leading the financial close and preparing financial statements. Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles. Experience with grant-funded and/or government-contracted organizations strongly preferred. Hands-on experience with reconciliations, general ledger, financial reporting, budgeting, audit preparation, internal controls, and grant or contract accounting. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple funding sources and understand restricted funds, cost allocations, reimbursement requirements, and program-level financial reporting. Experience supervising and developing accounting or finance staff. Strong proficiency with accounting and financial-management platforms, Excel, and data/reporting tools. Strong analytical, organizational, documentation, communication, and problem-solving skills. High integrity, attention to detail, sound judgment, and ability to handle confidential financial information. Preferred Qualifications CPA, CMA, master's degree, or progress toward a relevant credential. Experience with a CDFI, economic-development organization, small-business lender, community-development organization, nonprofit, or similarly complex mission-driven organization. Experience with government grants, restricted funding, and reimbursement-based programs. Experience supporting or leading Single Audits and other federal or state compliance reviews. Experience strengthening internal controls and financial procedures. Experience improving financial systems, dashboards, automation, or other technology-enabled finance processes. Experience working with executive leadership and presenting financial information to senior leaders.
