We are looking for an Assistant Controller to join our Accounting team and play a key role in the continued development of JSE's financial operations. Reporting to the Controller, this is a hands-on accounting leadership position with broad responsibility across financial close, reporting, general ledger, internal controls, project accounting coordination, and process improvement. This is an opportunity for an experienced accounting professional to take ownership of critical financial processes while partnering closely with leadership across the organization. The right person will bring strong technical accounting knowledge, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to turn financial information into useful insight for the business. What You'll Do Lead JSE's monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, allocations, and balance sheet integrity. Oversee the preparation and review of monthly financial statements and supporting schedules, ensuring reporting is accurate, timely, consistent, and useful for decision-making. Analyze financial results, trends, and budget-to-actual variances, identifying risks, unusual activity, and opportunities that warrant leadership attention. Partner closely with the Project Accounting Manager to maintain the integrity of project financial information, including revenue recognition, WIP, job costing, project profitability, and indirect cost allocations. Oversee day-to-day financial accounting operations, including accounts payable, cash and banking activities, fixed assets, prepaids, accruals, and reconciliations. Lead, coach, and develop accounting staff by establishing clear expectations, improving cross-training and coverage, and building the team's capabilities as JSE continues to grow. Strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, approval structures, and segregation of duties while balancing appropriate risk management with operational efficiency. Serve as a key accounting owner of Deltek Vantagepoint , partnering with the Controller and other stakeholders to maintain system configuration, workflows, reporting, and data integrity. Identify opportunities to standardize, simplify, and automate accounting processes while maintaining appropriate controls and documentation. Support financial statement audits, tax compliance, regulatory reporting, and other accounting matters in partnership with the Controller and external advisors. Support cash management, banking relationships, cash flow analysis, and treasury activities. Oversee the reconciliation of payroll, employee benefits, and related accounts between payroll and benefits platforms in partnership with People Operations. Partner with the Controller and leadership on annual budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and financial analysis. Build strong working relationships with Project Accounting, Operations, Team Leads, and other functional leaders, helping translate accounting requirements into practical business processes. Serve as a trusted partner to the Controller and provide leadership coverage when needed, including representing the accounting function in leadership discussions during the Controller's absence. What We're Looking For Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required. At least 7 years of progressive accounting experience , including at least 3 years in a supervisory or senior accounting role. Significant experience with financial close, general ledger accounting, financial reporting, and staff supervision. Experience in an engineering, architecture, professional services, construction, or other project-based organization strongly preferred. Demonstrated experience leading accounting staff and improving accounting processes. Prior Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, Senior Accounting Manager, or comparable accounting leadership experience preferred. CPA highly preferred. ERP experience required; Deltek Vantagepoint experience strongly preferred. Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency required, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and financial modeling. Familiarity with Power BI or similar reporting tools is a plus. Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, project accounting, job costing, and revenue recognition in a project-based environment. Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain accuracy under pressure, exercise sound judgment, and communicate complex financial concepts clearly. Why join JSE?
