Founded in 1909, The Newark Museum of Art is New Jersey's largest fine art museum and one of the nation's most distinguished cultural institutions, stewarding more than 300,000 artworks and artifacts spanning art, science, and natural history. Under the leadership of Director & CEO Lisa Funderburke, the Museum is entering an exciting new chapter of growth, investing in the systems, infrastructure, and financial discipline needed to support a significant campus expansion and long-term institutional success. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and Consulting CFO, the Controller will serve as a key member of the Leadership Team and oversee the Museum's accounting operations, financial planning, reporting, compliance, treasury management, and internal controls. This leader will play a critical role in modernizing financial systems and processes, strengthening financial governance, supporting capital projects, and providing strategic financial insight across the organization. Key Responsibilities Lead accounting operations, including financial reporting, general ledger management, monthly and annual close, audit coordination, and tax filings. Develop annual budgets, forecasts, and long-range financial plans in partnership with senior leadership and department heads. Build multi-year financial projections supporting exhibitions, capital projects, and institutional priorities. Oversee financial governance, accounting policies, compliance, and internal control frameworks. Modernize finance systems, reporting capabilities, and business processes to improve efficiency and accuracy. Manage cash flow, banking relationships, debt obligations, and treasury activities. Partner closely with Development to oversee grants, contributions, and related reporting requirements. Provide financial analysis, variance reporting, and decision support to leadership, committees, and trustees. Monitor capital project budgets and collaborate with Facilities and Development on long-term planning initiatives. Lead, develop, and mentor the accounting team while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Ideal Candidate Minimum of 10 years of accounting experience, including at least 5 years in a leadership role within a nonprofit organization. CPA or equivalent certification preferred. Strong expertise in budgeting, financial planning and analysis, audit management, financial reporting, payroll, and grant accounting. Knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards, US GAAP, Form 990 reporting, and regulatory compliance requirements. Experience overseeing financial systems implementations, upgrades, or process improvement initiatives. Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing teams. Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex financial information for diverse audiences. Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities. Collaborative, strategic, and service-oriented leadership style.
