Job Description
Corporate Controller - Mechanical Contracting About Bogush Inc . Bogush Inc. is one of New Jersey's leading mechanical contracting and service companies, with more than 50 years in business and multiple locations throughout the state. We serve a broad and diverse customer base through a large, well-established operation supported by an experienced workforce and a comprehensive accounting and administrative team. Our organization also includes multiple business real-estate holdings, adding to the scale and complexity of our financial operations. Bogush Inc. offers the stability of a long-established company together with the opportunity to play a meaningful role in its continued success. Position Summary Due to the size and complexity of the organization, Bogush Inc. is expanding its accounting leadership structure to include two Corporate Controllers working in close partnership with the CFO and the broader accounting department. This Corporate Controller will work side by side with our existing Controller and CFO and will report jointly and directly to both. Together, they will provide leadership and oversight for daily accounting operations, monthly and year-end closings, financial reporting, compliance, audits, internal controls, and long-term continuity. The broader accounting and administrative department includes Human Resources, accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, and other accounting staff. The department also manages the accounting and financial records for the company's business real-estate holdings. The new Corporate Controller will collaborate across these functions, provide technical accounting guidance, and help keep daily workflows and closing activities coordinated. This is a hands-on position for an experienced accounting professional with deep technical knowledge. The successful candidate must be comfortable working directly in the accounting system, preparing and reviewing journal entries and reconciliations, investigating discrepancies, and maintaining schedules. Along with leadership responsibilities, this individual will be actively involved in all aspects of the accounting department, including the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, cash activity, payroll accounting coordination, monthly and year-end closings, and financial reporting. Key Responsibilities Work collaboratively with the existing Controller and CFO to oversee daily accounting operations and maintain accurate, timely financial records. Work closely with the Human Resources, accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, and accounting staff to coordinate workflows, resolve accounting issues, and maintain accurate records. Share responsibility for the general ledger, cash activity, bank reconciliations, and related accounting workflows. Lead and perform monthly and year-end closing activities, including maintaining the close calendar and resolving outstanding items. Prepare and review complex journal entries, including payroll, accrued expenses, taxes, employee benefits, 401(k), insurance, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and depreciation. Reconcile material balance-sheet accounts, verify revenue and expense cutoffs, analyze general-ledger activity, and correct errors promptly. Prepare and review monthly financial statements and supporting schedules for completeness and accuracy. Maintain detailed fixed-asset records and depreciation schedules for vehicles, buildings, land, real-estate improvements, equipment, purchases, trade-ins, and disposals. Oversee accounting for the company's business real-estate holdings, including property-level transactions, reconciliations, fixed assets, depreciation, property taxes, insurance, and supporting schedules. Maintain book and tax depreciation schedules and coordinate depreciation matters with the company's outside CPA. Reconcile 401(k) deductions, employer contributions, benefit accounts, and provider records; support annual testing, Form 5500 preparation, and plan audits. Maintain schedules for workers' compensation, general liability, automobile, property, and umbrella insurance; support renewals and premium audits. Prepare accounting schedules and supporting documentation for income-tax work, payroll taxes, sales and use taxes, property taxes, 1099 reporting, financial audits, insurance audits, and retirement-plan audits. Strengthen internal controls, document procedures, cross-train accounting personnel, and provide knowledgeable coverage when needed. Assist with staff guidance and workflow while remaining personally involved in detailed accounting work. Payroll and Certified Payroll Knowledge Our Human Resources department has primary responsibility for processing regular and certified payroll. The Corporate Controller will partner with HR on the accounting side of payroll by reviewing payroll-related journal entries, reconciling payroll activity to the general ledger and bank records, monitoring payroll liabilities, and helping resolve discrepancies. The successful candidate must understand payroll and certified payroll requirements well enough to provide knowledgeable backup and continuity support when requested. Experience with prevailing-wage payroll, Davis-Bacon requirements, federal Form WH-347, the New Jersey Wage Hub, union payroll, fringe benefits, and cash-in-lieu calculations is highly valued. This position supports and collaborates with HR; it does not replace HR's primary payroll responsibilities. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field. At least 10 years of progressive, hands-on accounting experience, including at least five years in a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Director, or comparable senior accounting role. At least five years of accounting experience with a mechanical contractor, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire-protection, specialty-trade, construction-service, or public-works contractor. Advanced knowledge of general-ledger accounting, monthly and year-end closings, account reconciliations, financial statements, and complex journal entries. Strong working knowledge of payroll accounting, including payroll journal entries, payroll liabilities, benefits, 401(k), and certified payroll requirements. Demonstrated experience maintaining vehicle, equipment, and real-estate fixed-asset and depreciation schedules. Experience supporting tax preparation, outside CPA work, financial audits, insurance audits, and 401(k) audits. Advanced Excel skills and experience working directly in accounting or ERP systems. Exceptional numerical accuracy, attention to detail, judgment, and follow-through. Ability to collaborate effectively, share responsibility, and communicate clearly with the existing Controller, CFO, HR, and accounting staff. Willingness to work on site and remain directly involved in day-to-day accounting activities. Preferred Qualifications Active CPA license. Experience with New Jersey prevailing-wage requirements, the New Jersey Wage Hub, Davis-Bacon reporting, and union and nonunion payroll. Experience in a privately held mechanical contracting or field-service company. Experience supervising and developing accounting staff while remaining hands-on. What Success Looks Like The successful candidate will be a precise, dependable, and highly knowledgeable accountant who can work as a true partner to our existing Controller and CFO. This person will question unusual entries, investigate discrepancies to resolution, meet closing deadlines, and help ensure that the company is prepared for audits, reporting requirements, and leadership continuity. Final candidates should expect a practical accounting assessment covering journal entries, account reconciliations, payroll accounting, and fixed-asset transactions. Bogush Inc. is an equal-opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other status protected by applicable law.
