Consulting Controller Back Office Support Solutions Santa Ana, CA Job Details Contract $60 - $70 an hour 19 hours ago Qualifications Internal controls Microsoft Excel Bachelor's degree GAAP Managing accounting teams QuickBooks Document review Delegation Full Job Description Back Office Support Solutions (BOSS) is seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to join our team as an independent contractor and provide Controller-level support to an established client located in Santa Ana, California . This is not a full-time position and is not a fully remote position. The engagement will be performed on a hybrid basis , with regular onsite work required at the client's Santa Ana location and remaining work performed remotely as appropriate. The Controller will work as part of the BOSS team, with support from BOSS leadership and other accounting resources. We are looking for someone who can step into a complex operating environment, quickly understand the business and accounting function, provide strong day-to-day Controller oversight, and help us improve the efficiency, structure, controls, and reliability of the client's accounting processes. What You'll Be Responsible ForController & Financial Reporting Oversee the client's accounting function and maintain the integrity and accuracy of the general ledger. Manage and review monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities. Prepare and review financial statements. Prepare quarterly financial and management reporting packages , including expanded P&L reporting and supporting financial analysis. Review reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and other accounting activity. Maintain and strengthen appropriate accounting procedures and internal controls. Support budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow analysis, and other financial analysis as needed. Assist with financial reporting provided to ownership and management. Coordinate with outside tax, banking, and other financial professionals as appropriate. Inventory & Operational Accounting Provide accounting oversight for inventory and other operationally significant accounts. Ensure inventory activity and balances are appropriately captured, reconciled, and reflected in the general ledger. Develop an understanding of the client's operational processes and how activity flows through the accounting system. Work with client personnel to improve inventory processes, controls, documentation, and reporting. Investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies and identify underlying process issues. Payroll, ADP & Related Processes Provide Controller-level oversight of payroll and related accounting. Work with ADP and the client's accounting system to improve the flow of payroll information into the accounting records. Review the existing payroll process and help establish a more efficient, reliable, and well-controlled process going forward. Review payroll reconciliations, entries, and reporting. Identify opportunities to reduce manual payroll-related entries and duplicate work through better processes, system utilization, and automation. Work with client personnel and BOSS resources on payroll and related administrative matters as appropriate. Accounting Team Oversight Work collaboratively with the client's existing accounting personnel. Work with BOSS leadership to establish an effective division of responsibilities so work is performed at the appropriate level. Delegate transactional and lower-level accounting activities to the appropriate team members rather than performing work unnecessarily at the Controller level. Review work performed by accounting support personnel and provide training and guidance where needed. Establish clear workflows, responsibilities, deadlines, and review procedures. Help develop repeatable processes that improve efficiency and reduce dependency on individual team members. Systems & Process Improvement Evaluate existing accounting processes, workflows, systems, and controls and identify opportunities for improvement. Assist BOSS and client leadership in evaluating the client's accounting-system environment, including Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains) and potential alternatives such as QuickBooks Enterprise. Support accounting-system improvements and any future system transition, if appropriate. Evaluate existing system connections and integrations, including payroll/ADP, and identify opportunities for better integration and automation. Identify opportunities to eliminate unnecessary manual processes, duplicate work, and inefficient workflows. Help implement practical automation and process improvements. Develop and document procedures that make the accounting function more efficient, scalable, and reliable. What We're Looking For This role requires more than someone who can simply maintain an existing accounting process. We are looking for a Controller who can assess, improve, lead, and execute . Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Significant progressive accounting experience with Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or comparable responsibilities. Strong knowledge of GAAP and full-cycle accounting. Strong month-end close, financial statement preparation, general ledger, reconciliation, and internal-control experience. Experience with inventory accounting. Experience with payroll accounting and ADP . Experience overseeing accounting staff and reviewing work performed by others. Strong Excel skills. Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities. Ability to work independently while functioning as part of the BOSS team. Ability to communicate professionally with client leadership and personnel. Demonstrated experience improving accounting processes and workflows. Highly Desirable CPA or equivalent advanced accounting experience. Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains) experience. QuickBooks Enterprise experience. Experience with accounting/ERP system conversions. Experience in manufacturing, aviation, aerospace, maintenance/repair, distribution, or another inventory-intensive operating environment. Experience supporting privately held or owner-operated businesses. Experience preparing executive-level and quarterly management financial reporting. Experience improving payroll/accounting-system integrations and related workflows. The Right Fit The person who will be successful in this engagement is someone who is: A genuinely strong Controller who is also willing to be hands-on when necessary. Comfortable walking into an existing accounting environment, learning how the business operates, and determining what is working and what needs improvement. Able to appropriately delegate lower-level work while maintaining strong review and accountability. Comfortable working with both accounting personnel and senior management. Capable of turning financial information into useful management reporting and analysis, rather than simply producing financial statements. Comfortable identifying inefficient or manual processes and developing practical solutions. Practical and solutions-oriented rather than overly theoretical. Interested in improving systems and processes rather than simply continuing to do things the way they have always been done. Reliable, responsive, organized, and comfortable working within an outsourced professional-services model. Work Arrangement This is an independent contractor opportunity through Back Office Support Solutions (BOSS) supporting one of our clients. The position is hybrid and requires regular onsite availability in Santa Ana, California. Candidates must live within a reasonable commuting distance and be able to work onsite as required by the engagement. The engagement may require greater onsite involvement during the initial transition and onboarding period , with an ongoing hybrid schedule thereafter. Remote work may be performed for appropriate responsibilities when onsite presence is not required. This is not a fully remote position. Compensation will be based on experience and the final scope and anticipated hours of the engagement.
Pay:
