A Controller directs and oversees the treasury of a government, private corporation or non-profit organization, and may oversee the investment of funds. Supervises the quality of accounting and financial reporting within an organization, and directs preparation of reports that show the financial position of an organization.
Amniscient LLC and ChiliWorks LLC are affiliated entities operating under a shared ownership and leadership structure. Amniscient LLC leads product development, production, and sales operations, while ChiliWorks LLC focuses on research & development and intellectual property management. The Financial Controller will serve as the senior financial leader across both entities, ensuring accurate, compliant, and strategically aligned financial operations for each company's distinct business model.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting, tax, and financial reporting functions for both Amniscient LLC and ChiliWorks LLC. This role requires a hands-on accounting professional with deep technical expertise in NetSuite, multi-state and federal tax compliance, sales tax automation (Avalara), financial forecasting, and R&D tax credit qualification and documentation. The ideal candidate is a licensed accountant (CPA) who can manage the distinct financial needs of an operating/production/sales business alongside an R&D/IP holding entity, ensuring both are properly capitalized, taxed, and reported. This is a full-time, in-office position based in Houston, TX.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Accounting & Financial Operations Oversee day-to-day accounting operations for both Amniscient LLC and ChiliWorks LLC, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll coordination, and month-end/year-end close. Serve as primary administrator and power-user of NetSuite , including chart of accounts management, intercompany transactions, and financial reporting configuration across both entities. Prepare and review consolidated and entity-level financial statements in accordance with GAAP. Manage intercompany transactions, cost allocations, and transfer pricing considerations between Amniscient LLC and ChiliWorks LLC. Tax Compliance Oversee preparation and filing of federal and state income tax returns for both entities, coordinating with external tax advisors as needed. Manage state and local tax compliance, including nexus analysis across jurisdictions where the companies operate or sell. Administer sales and use tax compliance using Avalara , including tax rate management, exemption certificate tracking, and multi-state filings for Amniscient LLC's sales operations. Identify, document, and support claims for the Federal R&D Tax Credit related to ChiliWorks LLC's research and development activities, including maintaining supporting documentation for IRS/state audit readiness. Ensure timely compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local tax filings and payments. Forecasting & Financial Planning Develop and maintain financial models and forecasts for both entities, including cash flow, revenue, and expense projections. Partner with leadership to build annual budgets and periodic reforecasts, accounting for the differing financial profiles of a production/sales business versus an R&D/IP entity. Provide scenario planning and financial analysis to support strategic decision-making, capital allocation, and growth initiatives. Controls, Compliance & Leadership Maintain strong internal controls over financial reporting for both entities. Manage relationships with external auditors, tax preparers, banks, and other financial partners. Support benefits administration coordination and payroll-related financial matters in partnership with HR/ADP TotalSource. Mentor and, as the team grows, manage accounting staff or bookkeepers supporting either entity.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Active accounting license (CPA or equivalent) in good standing. 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including prior Controller or senior accounting leadership experience. Hands-on proficiency with NetSuite (ERP administration, reporting, and multi-entity/intercompany accounting). Strong working knowledge of federal and state tax compliance for corporations/LLCs. Experience with Avalara or comparable sales/use tax automation platforms. Demonstrated experience with financial forecasting and budgeting. Direct experience identifying, calculating, or supporting R&D Tax Credit claims. Experience working across multiple related entities or a parent/subsidiary structure preferred. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master's degree a plus).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in an R&D/IP-holding company structure and its distinct tax and accounting treatment. Experience supporting product development, manufacturing, or sales-driven organizations. Familiarity with multi-state sales tax nexus issues tied to physical or economic presence.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Full-time, in-office position in Houston, TX (not remote/hybrid). Standard business hours, with occasional additional time required during month-end, quarter-end, tax filing deadlines, and audit periods.
Pay:
$120,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year
