Job Summary We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to lead the company's accounting, payroll, and financial reporting functions. Reporting to the General Manager, the Controller is the company's senior accounting leader, responsible for accurate and timely financial statements, strong internal controls, and reliable payroll operations. The role combines technical accounting expertise with sound business judgment and the ability to work effectively across departments to support company decision-making. Essential Responsibilities Accounting & Financial Reporting Direct day-to-day accounting operations and the monthly and annual close process. Ensure the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger, account reconciliations, and supporting financial records. Prepare and review monthly financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow schedules. Establish and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls. Payroll & Payroll Reporting Oversee end-to-end payroll processing, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on schedule. Review payroll registers for accuracy, including hours, wages, overtime, commissions, deductions, and garnishments. Ensure timely filing of federal, state, and local payroll tax returns and deposits (e.g., Forms 941, 940, and state equivalents). Reconcile payroll liabilities and expense accounts to the general ledger each pay period and at month-end. Maintain compliance with wage-and-hour laws, tax withholding requirements, and multi-jurisdiction payroll regulations. Oversee year-end payroll reporting, including W-2 and W-3 preparation and filing. Serve as the primary point of contact with the payroll processor and coordinate with Human Resources on new hires, terminations, and pay changes. Maintain accurate payroll records and respond to audits, employment verifications, and payroll-related inquiries. Accounts Receivable, Payable & Cash Management Oversee accounts receivable and accounts payable, including collections, aging, credit exposure, and vendor payment schedules. Maintain bank reconciliations and monitor daily and weekly cash requirements, escalating significant issues to the General Manager. Partner with department leaders to strengthen working-capital and cash-flow management. Budgeting & Financial Analysis Coordinate the annual budgeting process and monitor actual results against budget, flagging significant variances. Analyze revenue, margin, and operating expenses to identify trends, risks, and opportunities. Develop financial reports and dashboards that support management decision-making, forecasting, and planning. Inventory & Cost Accounting Oversee inventory accounting, including valuation, transfers, adjustments, and physical inventory controls. Investigate significant inventory or margin variances and work with operations to improve accuracy and profitability. Audit, Tax & Compliance Serve as the primary accounting contact for external auditors and coordinate annual financial reporting. Prepare documentation for audits and coordinate with outside tax and accounting professionals. Ensure timely completion of required tax filings and monitor changes in accounting and regulatory requirements. Internal Controls & Risk Management Establish, maintain, and continually strengthen internal financial controls and segregation of duties. Monitor transactions for unusual activity and work with management to identify and mitigate financial risk. Employee Benefits & Retirement Plans Support administration of medical, dental, vision, retirement, and other company-sponsored benefit plans. Serve as the financial point of contact for benefit and retirement plan administrators, brokers, and insurers, monitoring contributions, deductions, and invoices. Assist with annual benefit plan renewals, cost analysis, and coordination with Human Resources on plan changes. Ensure accurate accounting and reconciliation of benefit- and retirement-related liabilities. Leadership & Management Support Lead, develop, and hold accountable the accounting team, setting clear priorities, deadlines, and performance standards. Serve as a trusted financial resource to the General Manager, translating financial results into practical business recommendations. Support evaluation of major purchases, capital expenditures, contracts, and other strategic financial decisions. Maintain confidentiality of financial, payroll, and employee compensation information Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible accounting or financial management experience, including payroll oversight. Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial statements, reconciliations, budgeting, and internal controls. Demonstrated experience managing an accounting or payroll function. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and financial/accounting or payroll software. Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to maintain confidentiality and sound judgment. Preferred CPA or other relevant professional certification. Experience in wholesale, beverage, food distribution, manufacturing, or another inventory-intensive business. Experience with multi-state payroll, payroll tax compliance, and payroll system administration. Experience supporting acquisitions, financing, or other strategic transactions. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong technical accounting and payroll compliance knowledge. Ability to analyze complex financial and payroll data and identify meaningful trends. Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to explain financial and payroll matters in clear business terms. High level of integrity, professional judgment, and attention to detail. Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines and work independently while keeping leadership informed.

$110,000.00 - $135,000.00 per year
