Please check our residency definition to determine if you qualify. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fish and Game Program Technician located in Ketchikan, Alaska!
What you will be doing:
This is a dynamic, full-time, year-round position that is the face behind the counter for the Commercial Fisheries division of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game office in Ketchikan. This position will primarily interact with commercial, subsistence, and personal use fishery participants in the Ketchikan area in support of local and regional fisheries management, while providing a vital blend of public service, administrative support, and technical assistance, for management and research biologists. Those who excel in communication, office management and budgeting procedures, who want to broaden their understanding of finfish and shellfish fisheries, enjoy working with people and are looking for a job that is rooted in the pulse of the community are encouraged to apply. Our mission, values, and culture: The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) operates under a constitutional mandate to manage the fish, wildlife, and aquatic resources on the sustained yield principle, with a core mission to protect, maintain, and improve these resources while managing their use and development in the best interest of Alaska's economy and public well-being through scientific management, public involvement, long-term opportunities for resource use and enjoyment, and professionalism among staff. The position helps foster positive interactions with a diverse group of stakeholders—including subsistence, personal use, and commercial fishery participants—the incumbent helps strengthen community confidence in ADF&G's commitment to conservative resource management. The Alaska Department of Fish & Game strives for a diverse and inclusive workforce where safety and well-being are paramount and employees at all levels promote a culture where everyone is valued, treated equitably, and respectfully. The benefits of joining our team: The program technician in the Ketchikan office has an immediate impact on the direct users of Alaska's fisheries resources and specifically, among all the users in the greater Ketchikan management area. The variety of daily interactions with diverse community members, from subsistence users to commercial operators—and the opportunity to contribute to conservative management that ensures the long-term sustainability of species like salmon, herring, and shellfish for future generations is compelling. Daily work constantly shifts, presenting an ever-changing environment as the primary duties change as the calendar year progresses, due to the seasonal nature of the fishery seasons and the various commercial fisheries prosecuted throughout the calendar year. Representing and assisting administratively, both research and management staff for commercial fisheries, results in a much faster-paced office environment that is offered elsewhere. You will work in a friendly, supportive environment that fosters both collaborative and independent tasks geared towards sustaining Alaska's resources for future generations. Year-round employment with competitive State of Alaska benefits, retirement, and health insurance. The working environment you can expect: This position is in the ADF&G office in Ketchikan, on the second floor of the First Bank building next to the Plaza mall. It stays busy with a constant flow of in-person and phone interactions, data processing, permit issuance, and collaborative support for area management biologists, research biologists, and other seasonal personnel. This work will require the incumbent to coordinate and execute local errands to support programs and office needs including distribution of mail and in-town travel support for biologists and seasonal staff. Additionally, travel may occur for training or regional staff meetings with trips to other communities in Southeast Alaska and occasional opportunities to assist in field work. This is an in-town position in Ketchikan, Alaska and housing, relocation, and transportation are not provided.
