Job Description
THIS POSITION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED

The City of Auburn is seeking our next Fleet/General Services Manager to work in our Maintenance & Operations Division. This role provides an opportunity to directly support the delivery of essential public services to the City, by managing and planning the maintenance, repair, and lifecycle of the City's vehicle and equipment fleet. By providing direct oversight of fleet operations and supervision of technical staff, this role ensures safe, reliable, and cost-effective service level delivery. In addition to the technical aspect, this role supports the Central Stores team as well as administrative functions associated with fleet operations including purchasing, inventory coordination, and budget tracking. The City is looking for a skilled, forward-thinking individual who has experience managing multiple integrated functions (e.g. fleet, warehouse/central stores, procurement, asset management systems) and is comfortable working in a high-demand environment, where responsiveness and continuity of operations are essential. It will be important for this person to have strong leadership, operational expertise, and the ability to drive efficiency across multiple functions by using data to support decision-making and long-term planning efforts. Additional key components of this role are a commitment to safety and regulatory compliance, high operational standards, and the ability to evaluate and improve workflows with a focus on cost control and service delivery.REQUIRED SKILLS/MUST HAVES
Proven leadership and supervisory experience managing staff in a complex operational environment Strong knowledge of fleet operations, vehicle/equipment maintenance, and inventory/warehouse management Experience with public sector procurement, purchasing, and asset management processes Ability to manage budgets , control costs, and support interfund or cost-recovery systems Skilled in using asset management and fleet systems (e.g., Cartegraph or similar platforms) Strong problem-solving ability with a focus on improving workflows and operational efficiency Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to coordinate across multiple divisions Ability to ensure compliance with safety regulations (WISHA/OSHA) and enforce safe work practices Demonstrated ability to supervise , train, evaluate, and hold staff accountable Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a 24/7 operational environment In this role, you will: Lead and oversee fleet operations- Ensure the City's vehicles and equipment are maintained, repaired, and operational 24/7, including emergency/off-duty response readiness. Manage central stores and inventory systems
- Oversee parts, materials, fuel systems, and warehouse operations to ensure accurate inventory, cost control, and support for all divisions. Direct purchasing and asset management
- Procure vehicles, equipment, and supplies in compliance with regulations while managing lifecycle, costs, and replacement planning. Supervise staff and operations
- Assign, schedule, train, and evaluate employees while ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality work across fleet and general services. Drive operational efficiency and planning
- Analyze workflows, implement improvements, and develop short
- and long-term plans, budgets, and level-of-service standards. Coordinate department-wide support and systems
- Work with other divisions to ensure service continuity, manage asset management software (Cartegraph), and support administrative functions and customer service.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
High School Diploma , or equivalent, AND Five (5) years of experience in fleet maintenance and repair management; AND Two (2) years of experience supervising technical staff and managing maintenance programs ; OR A combination of education, training, and experience that would indicate the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this role. Driver's license requirement: Possess and retain a valid WA State driver's license throughout tenure of employment without impending loss at the time of appointment.WE WOULD LOVE IT IF YOU
Have college or technical school course work in business, accounting, or maintenance management. Have previous experience in municipal fleet operations and asset management. Have previous experience in public sector budgeting. Have previous supervisory experience in a union environment.
