Job Description

Job Title:
Senior Accountant Who We Are:
Community Counseling and Mediation (CCM) is a leading Brooklyn-based behavioral health organization dedicated to addressing the root causes of mental illness, substance abuse, and alcohol use. Since 1982, CCM has grown to serve over 25,000 individuals and families annually across Brooklyn and Manhattan. We provide a wide range of culturally sensitive social support, counseling, mental and physical health, education, and supportive housing services to at-risk children, youth, and families in underserved communities.
Position Overview:
The Senior Accountant (Accounting Manager Track) is a high-impact, individual contributor role designed for advancement into accounting leadership. This position manages complex accounting areas, drives close execution, and serves as a technical and process lead within the finance team. Over time, the role is expected to demonstrate readiness for people management, cross-functional leadership, and expanded judgment.
Core Responsibilities:
Close Ownership & Financial Reporting Manage end-to-end accounting for assigned balance sheet and P&L areas Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes Prepare and review journal entries, financial analyses, and reconciliations Maintain accurate balance sheets and general ledger accounts Ensure invoices, journal entries, and reconciliations are complete, accurate, timely, and audit-ready Update and review forecasts on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis Proactively escalate risks, unusual activity, or variances Technical Accounting & Judgment Ensure compliance with organizational policies, internal controls, and GAAP standards Support revenue recognition, expense matching, and estimate-based accounting Research accounting guidance and document conclusions as needed Partner with the Controller on policy interpretation and implementation Process Leadership & Control Own and improve accounting cycles (e.g., close, fixed assets, revenue, payroll) Coordinate with Program Management to ensure proper expense coding and allocation Design, document, and improve SOPs and close checklists Strengthen internal controls, documentation, and audit preparedness Identify control gaps and recommend solutions Team Leadership (Pre-Manager Scope) Improve A/P efficiency through automation and process standardization Review work prepared by staff accountants and provide actionable feedback Serve as a technical resource and mentor to junior team members Assist with onboarding and training of new hires Demonstrate delegation, prioritization, and coaching Systems & Scalability Leverage ERP systems and reporting tools to improve accuracy and efficiency Support system implementations and reporting structure design Partner with FP&A and operations to align data, reporting, and analysis Cross-Functional Partnership Serve as finance liaison to operations, payroll, HR, and billing teams Translate accounting requirements into operationally executable guidance Support preparation of external reports for banking and funder reporting Assist leadership with ad-hoc analyses and special projects
Qualifications:
Education & Experience Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (required) 5-8 years of progressive accounting experience Experience with month-end close, journal entries, and general ledger management Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Prior experience reviewing others' work preferred CPA or CPA-track preferred Nonprofit experience strongly preferred Technical Skills Strong GAAP knowledge and month-end close expertise Advanced Excel skills; ERP experience required (NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Oracle, SAP, etc.) Experience in multi-entity, regulated, or high-volume environments preferred Proficiency in MS Office, especially
