Grand River Dam Authority (GRDA) is looking for a motivated professional to join our team as a Health & Safety Specialist II. The Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining health and safety programs to ensure a safe and compliant work environment. This role collaborates with various departments to identify risks, conduct safety training, and promote a culture of safety. The ideal candidate has a strong knowledge of health and safety regulations, excellent communication skills, and a proactive approach to risk management.
Essential duties:
Conduct visual inspections of GRDA equipment and properties, supports inspection of contractors for GRDA safety rules and practices; and generates safety observation or equivalent communication to facilitate resolution of problems. Identify and correct safety Hazards to mitigate risk. Complete accident and property damage investigations. Determine and document preventive measures. Acts as a liaison for safety standards, reviews tail-board meeting reports, discusses non-standard topics with crews submitting the report. Attends regularly scheduled safety committee, steering committee, safety training, and monthly operations coordination meetings. Develop and present safety presentations, safe work plans, discussion topics and resolutions at monthly safety meetings and to work groups as assigned Reviews OSHA and PEOSH standards, industry trade journals, and other guiding documents to ensure OSHA and PEOSH standard compliance throughout the authority. Manage and/or reviews key findings from safety observations, job hazard analyses, and tail-board discussions, along with their resolutions. Provide guidance and direction to all hourly team members with regards to personal protection equipment, declining balance cards, potentially unsafe work environments. Periodically this position will provide recommendations to other safety team members including the Safety Director about how to potentially handle a situation Plans and executes complicated written safety plans that reduce risk for all contractors and team members. Develops written communication to key leadership team members relative to Contractor Management. Serve as GRDA's representative on the APPA Safety Committee, when necessary. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge, Qualities:
Must demonstrate "servant leadership" qualities. Knowledge of substation, relay, metering, vegetation management operations and maintenance practices. Knowledge or ability to learn about the types of equipment use in transmission & distribution. Ability to lead and communicate at all levels and understand that our employees are our customers. Understanding of electrical hazards, including energized work, minimum approach distances (MAD), grounding practices, and induced voltage Must have strong communication, written and presentation skills. Knowledge of safety and health hazards. Knowledge of chemicals and particulates present in the workplace. Knowledge of OSHA standards and National Electric Safety Code. Knowledge PPE requirements for all trades within transmission & distribution. Ability to analyze and solve problems. Ability to identify and anticipate occupation health and safety risks. Ability to collect and analyze samples to identify levels of pollution at a workplace.
Education, Training, Experience:
Bachelor's degree in occupational health & safety, industrial hygiene, or a related field required. Minimum of 2 years experience in occupational health & safety, industrial hygiene or related experience required.
Certificates, Registrations, Licenses:
Valid Oklahoma driver's license, or the ability to convert within 30 days for those with an out of state driver's license that are an Oklahoma resident. CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) desired but not required with applicable experience developing noise and air surveys. OSHA 30 certification.
Physical/Mental Requirements & Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an office setting in addition to an industrial plant environment. Must be able to work in all-weather environments frequently on elevated uneven walking and working surfaces, and have the ability climb stairs & ladders while wearing all required personal protection equipment. Will be required to sit, bend, stand, stoop, and work with arms extended for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
