Seeking qualified Herbalist and seasoned retail professional with prior retail management experience for role as assistant manager at Herbiary located inside Reading Terminal Market inner city Philadelphia. If we cannot help, be helpful in connecting outreach to the immediate community. Company overview Reading Terminal Market is a historic non-profit serving the Philadelphia community since 1893. Herbiary was founded in 2006. Herbiary has two locations, Philadelphia PA and Asheville NC, the business was purchased by the former headquarters manager in July of 2025. There is no current affiliation with any of the book publications. Bulk herb processing and packaging takes place at the headquarters in Asheville and replenishment is filled by that location.
Required Qualifications:
Extensive Retail Experience required Advanced level herbal education encompassing actions and a fully comprehensive understanding of herbal energetics. Completion of a formal herbal program is preferred but we will consider a well seasoned self studier. Substantial materia medica knowledge 2-3 years of prior experience in a management role required Please share if you have any professional level social media, design, or email list/newsletter experience; not required but up for consideration If interested in applying please fully review all details at the bottom of this listing. Position Details This is an in person position with the possibility of additional projects being assigned to complete remotely. Typically a 32 hour work week. Hourly pay rate is to be discussed during the interview process. Hourly rate is negotiable depending on herbal knowledge level and other qualifications from positions held in similar roles. Weekends are required, flexibility with your schedule is an advantage Holidays are required Standard retail black out periods are enforced during November-January and another during The Convention Center Flower Show which is usually February or March Shifts are typically 6 to 9 hours. Work day may start as early as 7:30am. The Market is open 8am-6pm everyday excluding major holidays. Open during inclement weather as long as public transport is running.
Duties include:
Customer Service Direct customers to suggestions of suitable herbal products, find reference in books and point out best herbal resources where they may find more information Use appropriate herbal etiquette and language that avoids making medical claims Call customers on product request list when new shipments arrive Bridge a Connection Connect customers that are deeply interested in taking on herbal studies with top level schooling and literature Ensure proper stock levels are maintained on sales floor Organize team to direct replenishment of backstock, dry herb sales floor stock numbers take top priority Create pick lists Monitor sell through to track upcoming product orders from vendor Maintaining accurate Inventory counts across the store and in backstock Monitor stand alone list of back stock inventory for accuracy use counterpoint system to program inventory worksheets, Arrange and oversee routine cycle counting of sections by vendor or product category Keeping backstock areas organized and tidy Sales Floor Presentation Direct staff on daily cleaning You will work alongside the visual manager to ensure Herbiary branding and image is consistent Time Management Ensure staff is completing tasks in a timely manner Receiving Oversee Receiving tasks, ensure the newly received inventory is properly recorded into inventory Organize shipments of dry herbs to ensure top sellers are most accessible Ensure all product is priced accurately Function as one of the primary points of contact for vendors Report any missing or broken products directly to vendor, arrange solutions Ordering Assist in replenishment by vendor Meetings Participate and speak at monthly staff meetings Communicate with owner/management on the phone several times a week Schedule Assist in writing staff schedule Find replacement for open shifts from employee call outs Reading Terminal Communication Primary point of contact of Reading Terminal Market, CEO, Marketing, All About Events, Maintenance, Security Incident Reporting Report any and all concerns minor or major to manager and ownership Social Media Oversee that social media is attended to (whether the assistant manager will take on posting is up for discussion) Fill in on other auxiliary tasks and cashier Monitor compliance with company policies, industry standards, and safety protocol Application process and requirements Cover Letter that includes details about qualified herbal experience Minimum of 4 references from past retail and management positions. Pay:
