About Valley Onward Valley Onward is a community-rooted nonprofit organization that cultivates residents into leaders and advances equitable health, racial justice, and economic opportunity. We partner with trusted community messengers to reach rural, immigrant, low-income, Spanish-speaking, and agricultural worker communities throughout Merced County and the Central Valley. Position Summary The Lead Community Health Worker (CHW) Organizer advances Valley Onward's CWOP work by coordinating with a team of three CHW Organizers and conducting trusted, culturally responsive outreach to workers. The Lead combines frontline engagement with daily team leadership, helping ensure that workers receive accurate information about workplace rights, labor protections, and available public resources. This position supports outreach planning, staff development, documentation, referrals, and grant deliverables while maintaining strong relationships with workers and community partners. Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the day-to-day outreach assignments, schedules, priorities, and coverage of three CHW Organizers in collaboration with the Program Coordinator.
  • Provide coaching, field support, onboarding assistance, and constructive feedback to CHW Organizers; model respectful and effective worker engagement.
  • Lead and participate in bilingual outreach through community events, presentations, workshops, phone banking, door-to-door canvassing, worker gatherings, and visits to workplaces or other trusted locations.
  • Educate workers about workplace rights and protections, including wage-and-hour standards, health and safety, retaliation, workers' compensation, and other CWOP priority topics using approved materials and training.
  • Help workers identify potential workplace concerns, document relevant information, understand available options, and connect with the appropriate Valley Onward staff, legal service provider, government agency, or community resource; do not provide legal advice.
  • Support at least quarterly skill-building trainings for staff or worker leaders, including participatory activities on recognizing possible violations, collecting evidence, and navigating referral or complaint pathways.
  • Review outreach records, sign-in information, referrals, follow-up notes, and other program documentation for completeness, accuracy, confidentiality, and timely entry.
  • Track progress toward outreach, education, referral, and training goals; identify barriers and communicate needs, trends, and proposed adjustments to the program supervisor.
  • Maintain productive relationships with workers, worker leaders, community-based organizations, public agencies, service providers, employers when appropriate, and other partners.
  • Participate in CWOP orientations, trainings, meetings, reporting activities, and other funder-required events.
  • Follow organizational policies, safety procedures, confidentiality requirements, mandated reporting obligations when applicable, and grant requirements.
  • Perform other related duties that support the program and Valley Onward's mission. Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or a combination of education and relevant community-based experience.
  • Demonstrated connection to or experience working with rural, immigrant, Spanish-speaking, low-income, agricultural worker, or other underserved communities.
  • Strong interpersonal, listening, public-speaking, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English and Spanish; bilingual fluency is preferred.
  • Ability to protect confidential information, maintain accurate records, and use good judgment when supporting workers.
  • Basic proficiency with email, Google Workspace, online forms, and mobile devices, with willingness to learn additional reporting systems.
  • Reliable transportation and ability to travel to community sites and worksites within the assigned service area; mileage reimbursement is provided in accordance with organizational policy.
  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend outreach, trainings, and community events.
  • At least two years of community outreach, organizing, CHW/promotora, worker advocacy, case navigation, or closely related experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate people, organize field activities, address day-to-day challenges, and follow through on program commitments. Preferred Qualifications
  • Community Health Worker/Promotor(a) certification or relevant training.
  • Knowledge of California workplace rights, labor agencies, referral networks, and the experiences of agricultural and other low-wage workers.
  • Experience with grant-funded programs, data tracking, facilitation, or popular education methods. Work Environment and Physical Requirements
  • Hybrid and field-based position involving office or remote administrative work, community events, presentations, door-to-door outreach, and visits to worker-centered locations.
  • Regular local travel and work outside standard business hours may be required based on community needs and scheduled activities.
  • Ability to remain stationary or mobile for extended outreach periods and to lift and carry outreach materials weighing up to approximately 25 pounds, with reasonable accommodation as required by law.
