Disease Intervention Specialist
Job Description
One of our clients in the government domain is seeking a Disease Intervention Specialist to support community health initiatives through substance use screening, behavioral health assessments, crisis intervention, public education, and outreach services focused on overdose prevention, Hepatitis C, and HIV. Disease Intervention Specialist Hybrid 430 College Street Newport, Tennessee 37821 8 Months Key Responsibilities Conduct validated substance use screenings, receive referrals, complete evidence-based mental health and substance use assessments, and provide crisis intervention and solution-focused counseling in community and health department settings. Educate the public on overdose prevention, Hepatitis C, and HIV; conduct outreach through non-traditional organizations; distribute naloxone and overdose education materials. Build partnerships with syringe service providers, regional overdose prevention specialists, mental health agencies, treatment providers, and other community organizations. Connect clients with mental health care, substance use treatment, harm reduction, primary health care, and recovery support services. Complete progress notes, track referrals, enter accurate data, and maintain records that meet contract, state, grant, and agency requirements. Attend meetings, case conferences, and training; support service improvement; and perform other community and agency duties as assigned. Qualifications and Key Skills Must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Understand and support medication-assisted recovery and know local community-based recovery services. Experience providing peer support and building lasting relationships with individuals and community organizations. Strong active listening, supportive questioning, customer service, professional boundaries, cultural competency, and commitment to treating diverse populations with dignity and respect. Proficient in Microsoft Office; bilingual English/Spanish preferred. Special Requirements A valid driver's license, vehicle, and proof of insurance may be required. Candidates must authorize a criminal history review and complete a background check before starting. A felony conviction requires further review but does not automatically disqualify a candidate; requested explanations or documents must be provided within seven days. Candidates will be checked against applicable vulnerable-person, abuse, Tennessee, and national offender registries for states lived in during the previous seven years. A registry listing is disqualifying. Physical Requirements and Work Conditions The role involves frequent light activity, occasional moderate physical effort, regular physical movement, and possible exposure to communicable diseases or unpredictable client behavior.
