Expanded Functions Dental Assistant | Full-Time | Bethesda, MD Position Summary The Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) plays a critical clinical role, supporting high-quality patient care through advanced assisting functions and exceptional chairside support. In addition to performing all duties of a Dental Assistant, the EFDA is trained and authorized to complete expanded clinical functions. This position contributes directly to clinical efficiency, patient experience, and practice growth by supporting providers before, during, and after dental procedures while maintaining the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and care delivery. Key Responsibilities Clinical Support & Patient Care Prepare patients for dental treatment by escorting them to the operatory, ensuring comfort, and reviewing required documentation. Assist the doctor during dental procedures with efficiency, accuracy, and professionalism. Anticipate provider needs and maintain a smooth clinical flow throughout procedures. Chart clinical notes accurately and in real time during treatment. Educate patients on oral health, treatment plans, and post-procedure care instructions. Expanded Functions (EFDA Duties) Perform expanded clinical functions as permitted by state law, including but not limited to: Placing restorations Applying sealants Coronal polishing (if certified) Applying topical anesthetics Take diagnostic radiographs efficiently and accurately. Ensure all expanded functions are performed under appropriate supervision and in compliance with regulatory requirements. Qualifications Active Maryland Radiology certification (Required) EFDA training and certification consistent with Maryland regulations (Required) Chairside experience in a general dental practice (Preferred) Experience working in a professional office setting (Required) Experience with Dentrix or similar dental practice management software (Preferred) Coronal Polishing Certification (Encouraged) Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills Ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety Reliable transportation
