Scope of Duties:

• The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery dental officer shall be proficient in all aspects of oral & maxillofacial surgery and limited general dentistry procedures. Specifically, the provider should possess the expertise and competency to perform the following:
• Make oral and radiographic examinions of the oral cavity and its adjacent tissue and structures.
• Diagnose phological or irregular oral conditions.
• Orders and/or interprets diagnostic measures, such as radiographic images, other imaging, models, etc.
• Administer local anesthesia.
• Complete dento-alveolar surgery, including simple, surgical, and complex exodontia, pre-prosthetic surgery, bone grafting, sinus and ridge augmention, vestibuloplasty and implant placement procedures
• Accomplish and arrange for pient consultion, work-up, admission, medical/dental specialty and inter-disciplinary care, completion of surgical procedures, and provide for post-operive and follow-up care of pients presenting with illnesses, injuries, and disorders of both the functional and aesthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral & maxillofacial regions.
• Complete oral & maxillofacial surgical procedures including but not limited to trement of facial traumic injuries/facial fractures, trement of phological conditions such as benign cysts/tumors, orthognhic surgery, biopsy procedures, and TMJ surgery.
• Provides clinical supervision, trement planning, and educional activities reled to the Dental Service AEGD-1 Residency Program and to dental staff assigned to their clinic locion as needed.
• Adheres to safety, health, and infection control standards, and demonstres knowledge in the use and reprocessing of Reusable Medical Equipment (RME).
• Responsible for clinic administrion in compliance with VHA, Medical Center and Dental Service Directives, Policies and Procedures

United Stes Citizenship:

Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of educion in allophic medicine or osteophic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a Ste, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United Stes, or in the District of Columbia.

Residency Training:

Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certificion. (

NOTE :

VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty stus.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for gradue medical educion, the Accredition Council for Gradue Medical Educion (ACGME) or American Osteophic Associion (AOA), in the list published for the year the residency, or fellowship if applicable, was completed; OR (2) One year of post medical school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post-training independent practice (performing under a full and unrestricted license) in the United Stes; OR (3) Non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United Stes (performing under a full and unrestricted license) performing duties reled to the position they are applying for (United Stes fellowships would be creditable towards this requirement), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with approprie professional training and believes has exposed the Physician to an approprie range of pient care experiences.

accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rher, they are to have a "scope of practice" th allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. In rare and unusual circumstances, the Facility Director can submit a memo to the VISN Director through the VISN Chief Medical Officer, who may approve requests for reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement for Physicians whose composite record of experience, accomplishments, performance, and qualificions warrant such action.
