Director of Nursing (RN) - Skilled Nursing Facility The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating all nursing services within the skilled nursing facility. The DON ensures the delivery of high-quality, resident-centered care while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including CMS and Department of Health requirements. This role provides leadership to the nursing department, promotes clinical excellence, and fosters a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous quality improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
Direct and oversee all nursing operations and clinical services. Ensure residents receive safe, effective, and individualized nursing care. Supervise, mentor, and evaluate nursing leadership, Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). Recruit, hire, onboard, and retain qualified nursing staff. Develop staffing plans and ensure appropriate nurse staffing levels. Maintain compliance with CMS, state Department of Health regulations, infection prevention standards, HIPAA, OSHA, and facility policies. Oversee resident assessments, care planning, medication management, wound care, infection control, and quality assurance initiatives. Lead Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities and monitor clinical quality measures. Investigate incidents, accidents, grievances, and allegations of abuse or neglect, ensuring appropriate documentation and follow-up. Collaborate with the Administrator, Medical Director, physicians, interdisciplinary team members, residents, and families to coordinate quality care. Prepare for and participate in state surveys, audits, and regulatory inspections, implementing corrective action plans when necessary. Monitor departmental budgets, nursing supplies, and equipment while promoting cost-effective operations. Provide clinical leadership during emergencies and participate in an on-call rotation as required.
Qualifications:
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state. Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred; BSN or MSN strongly preferred. Minimum of 3-5 years of nursing management experience in a skilled nursing facility or long-term care setting. Thorough knowledge of CMS regulations, state Department of Health requirements, OBRA, HIPAA, infection prevention, and long-term care standards. Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Experience with electronic health records (EHR), staffing management, and quality improvement programs.
