Job Description
Position Summary The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating all nursing services within the facility. The DON ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while promoting high-quality resident care, staff development, infection prevention, quality improvement, and operational excellence. The DON serves as a key member of the leadership team and collaborates with interdisciplinary departments to support resident-centered care. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Nursing Leadership and Management Direct, coordinate, and supervise all nursing services and personnel. Develop, implement, and evaluate nursing policies, procedures, and standards of practice. Ensure the delivery of quality resident care consistent with facility goals and regulatory requirements. Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to nursing supervisors, charge nurses, and clinical staff. Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, professionalism, and resident-centered care. Regulatory Compliance Maintain compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations governing long-term care facilities. Lead facility survey preparation activities and coordinate responses to regulatory findings. Ensure nursing documentation is accurate, timely, and compliant with applicable regulations. Investigate incidents, accidents, complaints, and allegations of abuse, neglect, or mistreatment. Develop and implement corrective action plans as needed. Clinical Oversight Monitor resident care outcomes and clinical performance indicators. Oversee resident admissions, transfers, and discharges. Ensure completion of required assessments and care planning activities. Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, therapists, and interdisciplinary team members regarding resident care. Participate in clinical rounds and review high-risk residents. Staffing and Employee Development Oversee recruitment, interviewing, hiring, orientation, and retention of nursing staff. Develop staffing schedules to ensure adequate nursing coverage. Conduct employee evaluations and performance management activities. Identify educational needs and coordinate staff training and competency programs. Ensure compliance with required certifications, licensure, and continuing education requirements. Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) Lead Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement initiatives. Monitor and analyze quality measures including: Falls Pressure injuries Infections Medication errors Hospital readmissions Resident satisfaction Implement quality improvement plans and corrective actions when necessary. Present quality metrics and outcomes to facility leadership. Infection Prevention and Risk Management Collaborate with the Infection Preventionist to implement infection control programs. Ensure adherence to infection prevention standards and outbreak protocols. Monitor employee health and resident safety initiatives. Participate in emergency preparedness planning and disaster response activities. Resident and Family Relations Address resident and family concerns promptly and professionally. Support resident rights, dignity, privacy, and quality of life. Promote effective communication between residents, families, and the healthcare team. Budget and Resource Management Assist in developing and managing the nursing department budget. Monitor labor costs, overtime utilization, and staffing effectiveness. Ensure appropriate management of supplies, equipment, and resources. Support financial stewardship while maintaining quality care standards. Qualifications Education Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing. Experience Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience. Minimum of 2-3 years of management experience in long-term care, skilled nursing, or rehabilitation. Demonstrated knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, OBRA, and long-term care regulations. Skills and Competencies Strong leadership and organizational abilities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Effective problem-solving and decision-making capabilities. Knowledge of clinical operations, survey readiness, and risk management. Experience with electronic medical records (EMR). Ability to lead and motivate diverse teams. Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift as required. Ability to respond to emergencies throughout the facility. Capable of working extended hours and participating in on-call responsibilities as needed.
