Technician Job Summary:

The Electromyography (EMG) Technician assists physicians in performing nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG) procedures used to diagnose disorders affecting the peripheral nerves, muscles, and neuromuscular junction. The technician is responsible for preparing patients, performing nerve conduction studies, routine and specialized under physician supervision, performing Evoked Potential studies, operating diagnostic equipment, documenting findings, maintaining equipment, and ensuring a safe and comfortable patient experience, communicating with referring providers, preparing/maintaining reports. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Prepare patients for EMG and nerve conduction studies by explaining procedures and obtaining relevant medical history. Verify patient identity and ensure appropriate documentation and consent are completed. Position patients appropriately for testing while maintaining comfort and safety. Perform motor and sensory nerve conduction studies under physician supervision, following established protocols and state regulations. Apply surface electrodes and stimulation electrodes accurately. Record, label, and document study results for physician interpretation. Assist the physician during needle EMG examinations by preparing equipment and assisting with patient positioning. Monitor patients throughout testing and respond appropriately to patient concerns or adverse reactions. Maintain accurate patient records in patient chart. Clean, disinfect, and maintain EMG equipment according to infection control standards. Perform routine equipment quality control and report malfunctions. Maintain adequate inventory of supplies and notify management when restocking is needed. Schedule patients and coordinate appointments as needed. Follow HIPAA regulations and maintain patient confidentiality. Adhere to OSHA safety standards and infection prevention protocols. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and continuing education. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Previous experience performing nerve conduction studies preferred. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and peripheral nervous system disorders preferred. Familiarity with EMR systems preferred. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work independently while maintaining close collaboration with physicians and clinical staff. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Physical Requirements Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods. Frequent use of hands for electrode placement and equipment operation. Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds. Manual dexterity sufficient to perform precise electrode placement. Visual acuity sufficient to interpret equipment displays and patient responses. Work Environment Outpatient neurology clinic. Frequent interaction with patients experiencing pain, weakness, numbness, or neuromuscular disorders. Exposure to standard clinical environments requiring adherence to infection control procedures.
