The Philadelphia Research and Education Foundation (PREF) is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit that supports the research and teaching mission of the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center (CMCVAMC). PREF is hiring a Genetic Counseling Assistant (GCA). This position reports to the Clinical Genetics Nurse and the Executive Director of PREF.
Major Duties:
The GCA will be responsible for higher level administrative tasks to support genetic counseling efforts. This may include coordinating patient appointments, coordinating sample collection, entering genetic testing orders, and communicating with patients. They will also answer basic patient inquiries with respect to genetic counseling. The GCA will perform clinical and administrative tasks as needed towards maintaining a high level of patient care and research protocols. Such duties may include but are not limited to: Administrative support Answering telephone inquiries and acting as a liaison between genetic professionals and patients Triage patient inquiries and referrals under the supervision of a genetic professionals Obtaining medical records for appointments Scanning records into patient charts Data entry Clinical support Abstracting medical records for patient appointments Inventory management of genetic testing kits Coordinating sample collection and transporting, packaging, and shipping specimens for testing Entering orders for genetic testing Tracking testing status, alerting the providers to delays, coordinating additional specimen collection as needed Obtaining genetic test results from outside providers Writing and sending test result letters Facilitating patient follow-up Performing duties as a scribe Supporting the mission of the team Creating and maintaining databases Assisting with preparation of case presentations Performing literature reviews to inform best genetic practices Participating in family educational programs Other duties as assigned to support the team and VA Medical Center
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor's degree in medical/scientific discipline appropriate to position required.
Other Requirements:
Detail oriented Experience and interest in working directly with patients Knowledge of and expertise in MS Office to include MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel Strong verbal and written communication skills Able to maintain confidentiality of information and records
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with genetic testing Knowledge of REDCap databases Interest in pursuing career as genetics counselor
Pay:
$40,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
