$31.11 - $37.18 per hour, Classified Schedule, Range 10 plus GTA Benefits/CalPERS Position Summary Under the direction of a Credentialed School Nurse and/or designee, the School-Based Health Technician provides health-related services to support student safety, attendance, and access to the educational program. Responsibilities include first aid and routine health-office care, medication assistance, authorized health procedures, student health records, and response to student health needs in accordance with medical orders, individualized health plans, established procedures, and applicable law. The School-Based Health Technician is not a licensed nurse and does not independently assess, diagnose, interpret medical orders, or make nursing judgments. Clinical concerns or changes in a student's condition must be referred to the Credentialed School Nurse or other appropriate personnel. That second paragraph is worth keeping because the source specifically limits the technician's role and reserves nursing assessment/judgment for licensed professionals. Primary Responsibilities Provide first aid and routine health-office care to students who are ill, injured, or experiencing health-related concerns. Observe students and promptly report changes in condition, abnormal findings, medication concerns, or other health and safety issues. Follow individualized health care plans, emergency action plans, Section 504 plans, IEP-related health procedures, and other written protocols. Assist students with personal care needs, including toileting, hygiene, positioning, mobility, and feeding support, as assigned. Support student health needs during school activities, field trips, transportation, and other settings when assigned. Administer or assist with medications when authorized, trained, and permitted, in accordance with current medical orders and parent/guardian authorization. Perform assigned specialized health procedures following required training and competency validation. Procedures may include diabetes care and insulin administration, glucose/ketone monitoring, glucagon administration, enteral feeding and gastrostomy care, catheterization, suctioning, oxygen-related procedures, ostomy care, seizure first aid/rescue medication, and other legally authorized procedures. Use assigned medical devices and health technologies safely and in accordance with student-specific plans. Maintain readiness for health emergencies and promptly activate appropriate emergency response procedures when needed. Accurately document health-office visits, medication administration, procedures, observations, interventions, and communications. Maintain confidential student health, medication, immunization, screening, and emergency records. Assist with health-related data entry, reports, notices, forms, record review, and follow-up. Maintain an organized health office, including medications, supplies, equipment, inventory, and expiration tracking. Protect confidential student information and follow applicable privacy and recordkeeping requirements. Communicate professionally and compassionately with students, families, staff, administrators, health providers, and community partners. Refer matters requiring nursing judgment, medical interpretation, or clarification of medical orders to the Credentialed School Nurse. Participate in required trainings, emergency drills, meetings, and competency reviews. Maintain a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment for students and families. Perform other related duties as assigned. Additional Responsibilities and Expectations Provide general campus supervision, as assigned, to support student safety, visibility, and behavioral expectations in designated areas. Work Environment & Physical Demands Work is performed in health offices, classrooms, restrooms, cafeterias, playgrounds, school vehicles, outdoor areas, and other school or community settings. The position requires frequent interaction with students and may involve exposure to communicable illness, blood or other bodily fluids, medical equipment, and emergencies. The employee must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, push, pull, and assist students with mobility, positioning, transfers, personal care, and adaptive or medical equipment. Lifting or moving students, equipment, or supplies must be performed in accordance with GTA safety requirements and with appropriate assistance or equipment when required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Experience in health care, school health, pediatric care, disability support, or a related setting preferred. Experience working with school-age children and/or students with disabilities or chronic health conditions preferred. Medical assistant, health technician, or other relevant postsecondary training is desirable. Knowledge of basic first aid, CPR/AED, infection prevention, standard precautions, and emergency response procedures. Knowledge of basic medical and school-health terminology and medication/procedure safety practices. Ability to accurately follow medical orders, individualized health plans, protocols, and safety procedures. Ability to recognize urgent health concerns, respond appropriately, and seek assistance when necessary. Strong organizational, documentation, communication, confidentiality, and interpersonal skills. Proficiency with computers, student information systems, and health-related technology. Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a school environment. Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification from an approved provider. Completion of required student-specific training and competency validation before independently performing assigned health procedures. Successful completion of required fingerprinting/background checks, tuberculosis clearance, mandated reporter training, and other employment clearances.
