EMS ACADEMY INFORMATION

The current vacancies are temporary (limited-term) positions with the Emergency Medical Services Division (EMS). This position participates in the City's EMS Academy. Academy Overview Train at the City's EMS Academy to learn emergency medical skills and procedures. Complete classroom and hands-on training in basic emergency medical care. Participate in supervised field training and emergency response activities. Academy Requirements Successfully complete all phases of the EMS Academy within a reasonable time. Complete the required coursework and training to meet the requirements for State of Hawaii EMT-Transport licensure. Obtain State of Hawaii EMT-Transport licensure in a timely manner. Career Advancement Upon obtaining your State of Hawaii EMT-Transport Certificate, advance to EMT II and continue your career with the City's Emergency Medical Services Division. Training Schedule Training is expected to begin around July 2027 and last approximately 20 weeks . What You Will Do Assess and provide emergency care to injured or ill patients, including recognizing life-threatening conditions and providing basic life support. Assist with patient treatment and transport by controlling bleeding, treating wounds, applying splints, moving patients, and providing care and comfort during transport. Assist with emergency medical procedures under the direction and supervision of higher-level EMTs and Mobile Emergency Care Specialists. Operate and maintain emergency equipment and ambulances by completing pre-checks, performing minor maintenance, and keeping equipment clean and ready for use. Complete required training and emergency response duties including defensive driving, emergency vehicle operations, in-service training, and Homeland Security programs. Perform other related duties as required. Special Working Conditions Work rotating, night, weekend, and holiday shifts as required. Respond to emergencies in all weather, road, and traffic conditions. Lift, move, and transport patients in physically demanding situations. May be exposed to communicable diseases, blood, bodily fluids, and other biohazards. May work in hazardous environments and around dangerous materials. Successfully complete an EMT-Transport course that meets or exceeds the curriculum required for the State of Hawaii Board of Medical Examiners EMT-Transport Certificate within six months of appointment. Comply with all requirements of the participating training facility as required to successfully complete the EMT-Transport training program.

In addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements for this position, candidates must pass a written test that assesses abilities important to effective job performance as an Emergency Medical Technician (e.g., reading comprehension, logical reasoning, and visualization ). ELIGIBILITY

Candidates who pass the written test will be placed on the Emergency Medical Technician I eligible list. Eligibles are referred to the Honolulu Emergency Services Department in order of their written test scores, starting with the highest score, as vacancies occur. The eligible list is effective for at least one year from the date of establishment, and may be extended by the Director of Human Resources.

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE

Veteran's Preference is applicable ONLY if you pass the written test. I f you are claiming veteran's preference, you must meet eligibility requirements at the time of application AND submit a hardcopy of your Form DD-214 to our office in order to receive credit. SELECTION PROCESS

Candidates must pass ALL phases of the selection process in order to become an Emergency Medical Technician I. Candidates who pass the written test are placed on an eligible list and referred to the HESD in order of their written test scores, starting with the highest score. Candidates will be referred to HESD when their written test score is reached. 1) Interview Candidates who are referred to the Honolulu Emergency Services Department will be scheduled for an interview. 2) Character & Background Emergency Medical Technician Recruits must possess sound moral character, integrity, and credibility in addition to the ability to provide emergency medical services. They must have the ability to make sound judgments in emergency situations. Each candidate's character and background (including a fingerprint-based criminal history records check) will be reviewed to determine suitability for employment. 3) Suitability Review The DHR will review criminal convictions, dismissals from employment, separations from military service under other than honorable conditions, and other factors as they relate to the position to determine suitability for employment. Due to the nature of the position, candidates will be required to be fingerprinted as part of their employment suitability review. The DHR will review criminal history record information from the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In addition, the candidate's driving records will also be reviewed.

DRIVING RECORD

At time of selection, candidates will be required to submit certified copies of official traffic abstracts from each state they have resided in during the last five years.

FINGERPRINTING REQUIREMENT

Due to the nature of the position, selectees will be required to be fingerprinted as part of their employment suitability review. The Department of Human Resources will review criminal history record information from the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. 4) Medical Evaluation Candidates must meet the medical requirements established for the City and County of Honolulu for the position of Emergency Medical Technician I. If selected, a medical examination will be administered to determine whether the candidate meets the medical requirements for this position. The HESD is a drug-free work place. In addition to passing the medical examination, you are also required to pass a drug-screening test. Illegal use of drugs is grounds for disqualification.
