Job Summary BioPath Medical Group is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented Pathology Laboratory Assistant to join our evening-shift team. This position plays an important role in the pathology laboratory by receiving and preparing patient specimens for processing, performing accurate specimen accessioning, preparing tissue cassettes, assisting with the pathologist's grossing workflow, and operating the tissue processor. The ideal candidate is organized, reliable, comfortable working independently, and has excellent attention to detail. Previous experience in a pathology, histology, clinical laboratory, or specimen-processing environment is preferred but not limited to. Duties Specimen Receiving and Accessioning Receive pathology specimens delivered by laboratory couriers. Verify that the specimen container and pathology requisition form match. Check patient identification and required information for accuracy and completeness. Verify that appropriate insurance information is included. Identify and report discrepancies or missing information according to laboratory procedures. Sort specimens into appropriate batches based on processing priority. Assign accession numbers according to established laboratory procedures. Accurately place accession number labels on specimen containers and corresponding requisition forms. Write and prepare tissue cassettes using the assigned accession numbers. Maintain accurate specimen identification throughout the entire workflow. Pathology/Grossing Support Prepare the grossing station for the pathologist before the start of grossing. Ensure necessary supplies and materials are available. Organize specimens and paperwork for efficient grossing. Maintain a clean and orderly grossing area. Assist with cleaning and resetting the grossing station as needed. UCI Health-Fountain Valley Tissue Cassettes Receive tissue cassettes from UCI Health-Fountain Valley. Compare the received cassettes against the accompanying log sheet. Verify that all expected tissue cassettes have been received. Document any missing, additional, mislabeled, or otherwise discrepant cassettes. Communicate any issues to the appropriate laboratory personnel. Tissue Processing Organize and prepare tissue cassettes for processing. Load tissue cassettes into the tissue processor according to established laboratory procedures. Select and initiate the appropriate tissue-processing program. Monitor the processor and report any problems or irregularities. Complete required documentation. Clean the tissue-processing area and equipment after use. Qualifications Previous experience in a pathology laboratory, clinical laboratory, specimen receiving, accessioning, or related healthcare environment is preferred but not required. Previous histology experience is a plus but is not required. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to carefully match specimen containers, requisitions, labels, and logs. Ability to recognize and report discrepancies. Ability to follow written procedures and established laboratory protocols. Good organizational and time-management skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Strong communication skills. Dependable and punctual. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced laboratory environment. Ability to maintain patient confidentiality. Ideal Candidate We are looking for someone who understands that accuracy is critical when handling patient specimens . The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, dependable, organized, and able to maintain a consistent workflow throughout the night. Someone with experience in pathology accessioning, specimen processing, histology, or surgical pathology will be especially well suited for this position. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to perform repetitive tasks involving sorting, labeling, writing, and handling tissue cassettes and specimen containers. Ability to lift and move laboratory supplies as required. Ability to safely work around laboratory equipment and chemicals while following laboratory safety procedures.
J Pay:
$22.00 - $25.00 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 per week
