Role:
Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with developmental, intellectual, or physical disabilities by providing compassionate and personalized support. This position involves assisting clients with daily living activities, promoting independence, and fostering community integration. DSPs work closely with clients to understand their unique needs, preferences, and goals, ensuring that care plans are effectively implemented. The role requires a commitment to advocacy, respect, and dignity, empowering clients to achieve their fullest potential. Ultimately, DSPs contribute to creating a safe, supportive, and enriching environment that promotes well-being and personal growth.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation (if required for community-based support). Ability to pass background checks and any required health screenings. Strong communication skills and a genuine interest in supporting individuals with disabilities. Basic knowledge of first aid and CPR or willingness to obtain certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience working with individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities. Certification as a Direct Support Professional or related credential. Training in behavior management techniques and person-centered planning. Experience with electronic documentation systems. Bilingual abilities to support diverse client populations.
Responsibilities:
Provide direct care and support to individuals with disabilities, including assistance with personal hygiene, meal preparation, medication administration, and mobility. Develop and implement individualized support plans in collaboration with clients, families, and interdisciplinary teams. Facilitate community engagement and social activities to promote inclusion and skill development. Monitor and document client progress, behaviors, and any changes in health or well-being, ensuring accurate and timely reporting. Advocate for client rights and needs while maintaining a safe and respectful environment.

The required skills enable DSPs to effectively communicate and build trusting relationships with clients, ensuring their needs and preferences are understood and respected. Strong interpersonal skills are essential for collaborating with families, healthcare providers, and community resources to deliver comprehensive support. Organizational skills are used daily to manage schedules, document care activities, and monitor client progress accurately. Problem-solving abilities help DSPs respond to unexpected situations calmly and adapt care approaches as needed.
