Direct Support Professional (DSP) Job Overview
SESAY'S CARE
is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and dedicated Direct Support Professional (DSP) to provide exceptional, person-centered support to an individual with developmental disabilities. This position is based primarily in the individual's home, with daily community outings that promote independence, inclusion, and meaningful participation. As a DSP, you will play a vital role in empowering the individual to live a fulfilling life by providing assistance with daily activities, encouraging community engagement, ensuring safety, and implementing individualized support plans. This position requires patience, flexibility, professionalism, and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team. Position Expectations We are looking for a DSP who understands that: The position is primarily in the individual's home. Each day includes time spent both at home and in the community. The DSP is expected to actively encourage and support social interaction, community participation, and meaningful engagement during outings. The individual receives 2:1 staffing; therefore, being a strong team player and communicating effectively with the second DSP is essential. The DSP must be comfortable working with and appropriately responding to challenging behaviors using positive behavior support strategies and established intervention plans. Existing behavior support plans and individualized care plans are already in place and must be followed consistently. However, the family welcomes respectful communication and values thoughtful input and observations from the DSP that may enhance the individual's quality of life. Duties and Responsibilities Assist the individual with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, meal preparation, and mobility assistance as needed. Support the individual in developing and maintaining independence while promoting dignity and choice. Provide transportation and accompany the individual on daily community outings, recreational activities, appointments, and social events. Encourage positive social interactions and help the individual build meaningful relationships within the community. Monitor the individual's health, behavior, and overall well-being, reporting any changes promptly to supervisors and healthcare professionals. Assist with medication administration in accordance with agency policies, physician orders, and state regulations. Prepare nutritious meals according to dietary requirements and assist with cooking and meal planning. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe living environment by performing light housekeeping duties. Accurately document services provided, progress notes, incidents, medication records, and other required documentation while maintaining HIPAA confidentiality. Implement individualized behavior support strategies and crisis intervention techniques when appropriate. Work collaboratively with family members, supervisors, healthcare professionals, and fellow DSPs to ensure continuity of care. Participate in required staff meetings, training sessions, and ongoing professional development. Required Skills and Qualifications Experience supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, behavioral challenges, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, or other special needs is preferred. Ability to remain calm, patient, and professional in challenging situations. Strong understanding of person-centered supports and positive behavior support techniques. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Ability to safely lift, transfer, and assist individuals using proper body mechanics and adaptive equipment when required. Knowledge of patient observation, documentation, and health monitoring. Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license may be required depending on the individual's needs. Willingness to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
