JOB SUMMARY

The Direct Support Professional (DSP)provides support and assistance to clients in a certified OMH Supportive Crisis Residence. The DSP will coordinate the admission, assessment, programming, and resources needed for the client during their stay and upon discharge. DSP staff are responsible to complete accurate documentation of services, provide peer supports using a person-centered approach, and ensure smooth operations of the respite house.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Ÿ Assist in the daily operations of a certified respite/residential program setting supporting individuals with MH/SUD challenges Ÿ Implement planned programming (activities/group sessions) with clients that will support their recovery and progress Ÿ Provide support and advocacy to individuals in crisis Ÿ Assist clients with accessing resources and community services needed during stay and upon discharge Ÿ Assist clients with the admission and discharge process Ÿ Assist clients with determining goals, create a care plan to support client success at the respite house and upon discharge Ÿ Maintain accurate records and complete documentation of client services and progress during stay Ÿ Provide peer support, model wellness and recovery methods to support clients Ÿ Demonstrate and model daily living skills to clients needing additional support (cooking, cleaning, etc.) Ÿ Help maintain overall cleanliness and safety of the house Ÿ Follow OMH regulatory requirements and agency policies and procedures Ÿ Communicate and interact with community agencies to coordinate services for clients Ÿ Provide transportation as needed for clients (appointments, activities) Ÿ Treat all clients with dignity and respect, and maintain professional boundaries with clients Ÿ Demonstrate teamwork among co-workers Ÿ Offer peer support to warmline callers by listening, sharing recovery and wellness tips, helping with parenting and stress management skills, and providing advocacy. Ÿ Flexibility with work schedule in the case of call-ins or scheduling issues Ÿ Attend staff meetings and trainings Daily Operations (80%) Other (20%)

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum of a HS diploma/GED, degree in human services preferred
• Five years of experience in human services (mental health/substance use preferred)
• Personal/lived experience affected by mental health or substance use
• Qualify for and obtain NYS Peer Specialist Certification within orientation period
• Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record to drive agency vehicles
• Successfully complete all required background and reference checks
• Complete all state/agency required trainings during orientation period, and annually, as required

MHAST KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

• Knowledge of MH/SUD issues facing individuals in the community
• Ability to handle crisis situations, traumatic events, or sensitive circumstances, support and advocate for individuals in crisis
• Knowledge of community resources, services, and systems to assist individuals with SDOH needs
• Understanding and sensitivity to support a diverse client population (race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, etc.)
• Knowledge or experience using an EMR/EHR system
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Teams, etc.)
• Ability to problem solve and use critical thinking skills
• Excellent communication skills (verbal, written)

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Residential setting, office environment
• Some exposure to cleaners, chemicals is expected
• Physical requirements include walking, bending, standing, climbing stairs, and lifting (light/medium-up to 50 pounds)
• Travel required when providing transportation to clients, or to travel between MHAST locations
• May need to work flexible schedule, depending on staffing needs
