Virginia In-Home Support Health & Joy Services is looking for an energetic, dependable, and person-centered Direct Support Professional (Joy Maker) to support a 28-year-old man in the Herndon area who is active, social, funny, and passionate about being part of his community. This is not a sit-at-home DSP position . The right Joy Maker should enjoy getting out into the community and helping someone build greater independence through real-life experiences. Meet the Person You'll Support He enjoys photography, airplanes and plane spotting, Metro trains, buses, swimming, walking, sporting events, museums, parks, music, animals, volunteering, advocacy, and exploring the community . He has an especially strong interest in public transportation and aviation and enjoys taking photos and videos. He is also developing his leadership, employment, self-advocacy, and independent-living skills. What You'll Do As his Joy Maker, you will support him to: Choose, plan, and participate in meaningful community activities. Build skills using Metro, buses, MetroAccess, and other transportation safely . Practice photography and enjoy aviation/plane-spotting activities. Exercise and maintain an active lifestyle while following his established safety precautions. Strengthen time management, budgeting, daily living, and problem-solving skills . Practice social skills, healthy relationships, personal boundaries, stranger safety, and safe use of phones and online communication. Complete tasks as independently as possible using least-to-most prompting rather than doing things for him. Navigate unexpected situations safely and make informed choices. Follow his person-centered ISP, health/safety protocols, and document services accurately in our EHR system. Who Would Be a Great Match? We are looking for someone who is patient, active, encouraging, dependable, safety-conscious, and comfortable supporting independence in community settings . A strong match will enjoy conversation and community activities and understand that great DSP support means coaching rather than controlling . You should be comfortable giving someone time to try, make choices, solve problems, and learn from real experiences. Experience supporting adults with developmental disabilities is preferred. Experience with autism, seizure precautions, community-based skill building, transportation training, or positive behavioral supports is a plus. A valid driver's license, reliable transportation, acceptable driving record, required background checks, and completion of Health & Joy/DBHDS-required training are expected.
