Job Description

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The Lab Technician reports to the Food Safety/QA Manager, and is responsible for: 1) Microbiological and chemical testing of product by packed Lot and by sampled WIP, 2) Environmental and hand swabbing to verify sanitation and hygienic efficacy, 3) Inventorying lab supplies and overseeing all laboratory activities, 4) Entering and maintaining laboratory testing results on logging spreadsheet and/or computer database, 5) Monitoring and reporting any food safety concerns to appropriate departments.
Responsibilities include:
  • Test and report microbiological and chemical results of outgoing product, including counts for: o Aerobic Plate / Coliform / E. coli / Salmonella / Staph. aureus / Listeria / Yeast / Mold o Free Fatty Acids / Peroxide Values / Aflatoxin
  • Other analyses and product grading, including: o Visual grading / Moisture content / Ro-tapping as required
  • Ensure that environmental swabbing is timely per protocol and validated with third party as needed
  • Interface with sanitation dept. to maintain efficacy of plant sanitation through environmental swabbing
  • Oversee special sampling and testing projects
  • Evaluate finished product for quality and acceptability per micro/chemical tolerances or customer specs
  • Communicate product quality issues to Food Safety/QA Manager and/or Plant Manager
  • Monitor and report any food safety concerns to Food Safety/QA Manager and/or Plant Manager
  • Maintain safe and clean work environment in the lab o Wash & autoclave utensils, beakers, jars, etc. o Wash/clean Hood and Oil Press o Inventory and stock lab items as directed and required
  • Perform other associated QC duties as required (e.g., sampling and grading, etc.)
  • Catalog and maintain analytical records (spec sheets, certificates of analyses, Grading results, etc.)
  • Sample and evaluate returned product and generate micro/chemical reports related to such
  • If needed, assist in pulling, packaging, and sending customer samples for Marketing/Sales
  • Monitor cold boxes and "hot" bins as required
  • Sample and test plant water from washroom or sanitation wash station
  • Participate on requisite "teams" and be an active team member as required
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties and additional tasks/special projects as assigned or required While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. $18.00 starting pay
