We approach this mission through a combination of in-house research, private sponsorship, and inter-institutional collaboration with the goals of expediting the development of novel treatments and fostering scientific understanding.
Position Description :
Gateway is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Research Technician to ensure the smooth and efficient day-to-day operations of our laboratory. The Research Technician plays a vital role in maintaining daily laboratory workflow, inventory, facility compliance, and technical research support. This individual will oversee digital equipment monitoring, reagent and small molecule preparation, safety protocols, waste management, and vendor logistics to ensure a seamlessly functioning lab environment for scientists and researchers. The work within the laboratories at Gateway include the use of different types of equipment, including, but not limited to, biosafety cabinets, microscopes, incubators, cryostorage units, ultra-low freezers, refrigerators, balances, sonicators, centrifuges, and pipettors. The Research Technician position entails the upkeep and maintenance of all equipment. The Research Technician would also be responsible for scheduling non
- routine maintenance for any equipment malfunctions that may occur.
Another aspect of the position would include maintaining a detailed inventory of equipment, supplies, and samples within the laboratories. This would also include weekly ordering of any reagents or supplies required for the scientists working in the lab. The Research Technician would work closely with research scientists to prevent project interruptions due to ordering issues or equipment malfunctions. Additionally, the role provides lab work support by assisting researchers with the preparation of experiments. Responsibilities will involve preparing reagents, such as small molecule aliquots that are required for experiments, and preparing media or diluting reagents, printing labels for sample collection. Key Responsibilities Facility, Equipment & Digital Monitoring
Digital Monitoring & Logging:
Monitor laboratory parameters daily. Log incubator temperatures, CO2 values, and humidity levels; clear daily min/max readings.
Environmental Data Management:
Download monthly temperature log reports, archive files to the drive under correct naming conventions, and upload for digital signatures.
Equipment Maintenance:
Perform weekly gas analysis on incubators. Execute Steri-run and Autostart cycles every 3 months (or as needed), preparing chambers by removing magnetic stirrers, managing HEPA filters, and refilling water pans.
Freezer Defrosting and Organization:
Coordinate and execute scheduled freezer thaws, safe sample transfers, IPA disinfection, and post-thaw logging. Organize freezers post-thaw and on an ongoing basis.
Safety & Compliance:
Conduct weekly eyewash station flushes, maintain printed and digital Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and monitor visitor sign-in logs for non-Gateway staff utilizing specialized equipment (e.g., Tecan, Seahorse). Gas & Cryogenic Management
- Maintain LN2 supply by ensuring a minimum of three full tanks on hand at all times.
- Manage twice-weekly Airgas deliveries/pickups (Tuesdays/Thursdays) and submit order details with proper catalog numbers.
- Safely change out empty LN2 tanks for cryostorage units using proper valving and wrench protocols, and log tank movements into the inventory tracking sheet. Inventory, Reagents & Small Molecule Preparation
Stock & Reagents:
Monitor and stock everyday lab supplies (conicals, serologicals, IPA bottles, plastic sleeves) across tissue culture rooms and common areas.
Reagent Preparation:
Reconstitute and aliquot small molecules to precise target concentrations following product protocols. Track 3-month post-resuspension expiration dates.
Chemical Inventory:
Log newly received items and individual kit components into the Gateway Chemical Inventory. Remove expired items and log them in the GIFBR Waste Log.
Autoclaving:
Autoclave plastics and water as needed. Waste Management & Daily Lab Upkeep
Biomedical Waste:
Collect red-bin waste daily for tissue culture setup and coordinate bi-weekly Stericycle box pickups.
Bleach/Aspirator Maintenance:
Flush and refresh aspirator bleach bottles twice weekly. Monitor vacuum lines and filters to prevent airflow clogs.
Daily/Weekly Cleaning:
Perform weekly lab cleaning (mopping, vacuuming, dusting, benchtop wiping) and conduct monthly deep cleans of Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs).
End-of-Day Shutdown:
Conduct end of day walkthroughs to confirm vacuum line shutdown, microscope powering/covering, BSC UV light activation, cryo-freezer levels, and secured fridge/freezer doors. Research Support & Lab Logistics
Label Preparation:
Generate custom Cryobaby labels in Microsoft Word for sample collections.
Assays & Testing:
Perform monthly Mycoplasma testing (DNA extraction & RT qPCR using CFX Maestro), measurements (ImageJ), and BCA protein quantifications.
Logistics & Shipping:
Receive, date-stamp, log, and unpack deliveries; forward packing slips to administration. Coordinate sample shipping.
Vendor & Team Communication:
Maintain ongoing communication with vendors and communicate package arrivals with cross-functional teams. Ideal Candidate Qualifications & Traits
