- Job Summary and Qualifications
POSITION SUMMARY
- Collects blood from patients of all ages as required by physician orders. Performs patient registration and accessions lab orders as appropriate. Processes blood to prepare for testing in all laboratory areas. Responds to phone inquiries in a timely manner and refers problems to the appropriate supervisor.

- Performs patient registration and insurance checks with attention to detail.
- Handles and processes specimens in accordance with policy, ensuring proper identification.
- Maintains patient confidentiality per HIPAA guidelines.
- Maintains a clean working environment. Manage inventory efficiently; awareness of material outdates, stock rotations and reduce waste.
- Able to recognize and resolve problems utilizing independent judgement and critical thinking, relying on procedures and applying scientific knowledge.
- Communicate effectively to other shifts and interdepartmentally when appropriate, regarding patient and operational issues.
- Notify management or other key stakeholders of problems or issues, as appropriate.
- Documents corrective actions taken for problem resolution, including errors.
- Meets all personnel standards in governing, regulatory and accreditation requirements for clinical laboratory testing.
- Conducts education and training for new personnel, fellows, residents, students and visitors within the Laboratory scope of practice.
- Is aware of the role of the position and its potential impact on patient care, the work unit, the department and facility operations.
- Works effectively inter or intra-departmentally and with teams to meet patient needs and organizational goals.
- Participates in quality and process improvement projects.
- Attends and participates in continuing education opportunities to maintain relevancy and currency in professional practices and standards.
