Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
The Laboratory Technician Assistant functions in a support role to the technical staff to perform tasks in various processes of clinical testing of patient specimens. Laboratory Technician Assistants are trained to be responsible for performing simple laboratory tests, conducting routine quality checks, processing and accessioning incoming specimens and assisting in daily department operations. Laboratory Technician Assistants are under the supervision of credentialed technical staff on duty and are guided to workload needs as appropriate. The primary goal is to utilize Laboratory Technician Assistants to help ensure a cohesive workflow across pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical service areas and produce uninterrupted quality patient care.
Job Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs basic laboratory testing procedures once competency is demonstrated as allowed by CLIA (EF). Supports tasks required in the operation of a clinical laboratory ranging from specimen and report processing to quality and safety tasks (EF). Follow ups and communicates timely with peers and technical staff to ensure work processes flow effectively (EF). Helps with inventory management and product storage (EF). Observes the presentation of physical spaces and addresses clutter, maintenance issues and posted materials for appropriate appearance and function (EF). Supports drug screening and breath alcohol collections as appropriate. May learn phlebotomy skills as time allows.
Hospital:
Adheres to organization-wide and other applicable policies and procedures. Day-to-day performance complies with the hospital's service excellence behavioral expectations and iCARE values. Performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital's Ethics, Compliance and Confidentiality Program guidelines. Performs within his/her professional Scope of Practice at all times.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Required:
Associates degree or higher education
Preferred:
Some science, math, computer and technology classes or equivalent experience in healthcare settings are beneficial.
EXPERIENCE
Required:
Any experience in a workplace with processes requiring critical thinking and problem solving is helpful, though in-Lab training will be provided for assigned tasks. Must be able to adapt to flexible work schedules with frequent interruptions in a fast-paced environment. Organizational and communication skills are important and having the ability to establish priorities for multifunctional tasks is key.
Preferred:
Keen interest in healthcare, clinical processes, and science is an advantage.
SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Required:
Critical and objective reasoning abilities, proactive thinking and follow through are necessary skills.
Preferred:
Confident and professional communication skills, both written and verbal are preferred. CPR training is optional.
LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Preferred:
An interest in pursuing online or in-person education in Laboratory science
