SANTA ANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT LICENSED VOCATIONAL NURSE BASIC FUNCTION
Under supervision of the credentialed school nurse and/or designee, perform specialized health services for students in regular education and special education programs. Communicate with parents, school site, and District personnel on health related matters. Assist with medical screening of students, disseminate health information, and provide appropriate medical care.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Perform appropriate medical procedures for the specialized and every day health needs of students. E Perform specialized health services to students including but not limited to toileting assistance, catheterization, gavage feeding, ostomy care, suctioning, and medications. E Provide emergency medical care in the event of serious illness or accident. E Assist in providing appropriate health instruction to students, school staff, and parents. E Maintain school health records. E Coordinate necessary health conferences with parents, staff, and community resources. E Coordinate services with the medical community for students' medical, health, and educational needs. E Prepare reports for District, county, and State agencies. E Order and maintain supplies for school health office. E Assist and maintain a neat, clean, and orderly health office. E Provide support and act as resources for all schools and District staff. E Administer medication including insulin as appropriate and pursuant to physician's instructions. E Assist students to develop self-control and self-esteem. E Plan and organize health clinics and assist in the development of health-related newsletters for students, staff, parents, and community. E Maintain professional competence through continuing education course work or experience. E Participate in the coordination of services pursuant to Individualized Education Programs (IEP), 504 Plans, Student Success Team Plans (SST), and other intervention plans. E Perform other related duties as required.
E KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Correct and appropriate medical procedures. Emergency medical treatment and procedures. Health and medical needs of general education and special education students. Specialized health procedures for medically fragile students and severely handicap students. Motivational and self-esteem development techniques for students. General goals of special education in the public schools. Electronic record keeping; confidentiality laws relating to student records. Clinical and health office apparatus. Laws and codes related to the administration of health services. Community health resources.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
ABILITY TO:
Perform specialized health procedures. Supervise and interact with students effectively. Work collaboratively with parents, staff, and community. Communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing. Deal with stressful situations in a calm and professional manner. Be flexible in scheduling workload. Lift and move students safely. Push and pull wheelchairs. Dispense medication pursuant to physician's instructions. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Comply with the District's customer service standards as outlined in Board polices. Seeing to read a variety of materials. Seeing to drive a vehicle.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A high school diploma and successful completion of a Licensed Vocational Nurse Program is required. Nursing experience in a hospital, clinic, or school environment dealing with school-age children is highly desirable.
License/Certificate Requirement:
Possession of a valid California Driver's License. Possession of a Licensed Vocational Nurse Certificate.
WORKING CONDITIONS
ENVIRONMENT:
Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Primarily indoor school environment. Some outdoor playground and field trip environment.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES
Lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling moderately heavy objects and materials, normally not exceeding sixty (60) pounds. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate computers and vehicles. Bending at the waist, kneeling, and crouching. Reaching over head, above the shoulders, and horizontally Standing or sitting for extended periods of time. Hearing and speaking accurately to exchange information. Seeing in the normal visual range with or without correction to read a variety of materials, operate a variety of equipment and drive a vehicle. Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a person with a disability to perform the essential functions of the job.
