General Description The nature of this position is to provide technical nursing functions with responsibility for care, treatment and general welfare of consumers (children and adults) with severe mental illness and/or mental retardation. Because of the unique nature of the community service delivery, extraordinary duties may be required in order to maintain the consumer in the community setting, including home visits, after on-call responsibilities, telephone consultation and interaction with schools and other community agencies.

Major duties include:

medication services, monitoring and work-up, screening/crisis services, annual evaluations, care coordination services, record maintenance and documentation, infection control, skills development and training, PAP applications, New Generation Report, coverage at neighboring centers, as needed. Requires good communication/interpersonal skills. Will participate in scheduled meetings to assist in developing goals and objectives and justifying services hours. Work is performed under administrative direction of the Center Director and clinical supervision from the Treatment Team Psychiatrist and the Quality Management Nurse. Education, Training, and Experience ( licensure and certification) High School graduation or equivalent. Certification of course completion from State accredited School of Vocational Nursing. Current Vocational Nurse license from the State of Texas. Minimum of three years experience as an LVN in a health care service delivery setting. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of agency regulations, rules, policies and procedures; nursing methods; skills and techniques. Working knowledge and understanding of mental illness, mental retardation and appropriate approaches to treatment and nursing functions. Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, with accuracy and tact, ability to relate and communicate effectively in a manner conducive to a harmonious work atmosphere.
