Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist patients to exam rooms and prep for medical exam. Takes vital signs. Obtains, verifies, and records health history of patients. Gathers pertinent health data through physical assessments and biological samples. Collects specimens for laboratory analysis. Provides basic patient care as ordered. Adheres to infection control/safety guidelines and confidentiality policies. Answers the telephone using proper technique and etiquette, routes calls, takes messages, and provides routine information to callers. Documents assessments, interventions, patient/family responses, medication dispensed/prescribes, and test results in medical records. Takes complete and accurate medical history on new patients and obtains pertinent information from returning patients. Performs basic urinalysis. Assists with the collection of lab specimens. Must be able to assist in emergency situations. Promotes wellness by providing patient education materials, communicating physician advice/instructions.

Competencies:

Intellectual:

Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology. Familiarity with health care systems, regulations, policies, and functions. Understanding of documentation standards. Knowledge of equipment, supplies, and materials needed for medical treatment. Understanding of basic laboratory procedures, including preparation and screening. Knowledge of infectious disease management and control and safety standards.

Interpersonal:

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and diverse patient populations.

Education, Experience, and Training:

High school diploma or equivalent. One year of previous experience working as a medical assistant preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Medical Assistant Certification Required BLS Certification Preferred Technical Skills:

Must have excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment including: Word, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to read and follow written and oral medical orders. Skills in initiating appropriate emergency procedures.
